I've got an opportunity to get a cheap PalmModem to go with my IIIc (OS 4.1). With my Mindspring dial-up account, will I be able to move around the web with any kind of efficiency? I have no experience with PDA/web connections.
I have no desire to download my voluminous e-mail onto the PDA - but I would like to check/respond to mail via the springmail website. Would this be possible with this setup?
Anyone have a suggestion/experience with this?

to be hounest i have no experience with the palm modem, lots of it however with the one in my Siemens S35i. so far i use it to get actual updates and mail wherever i am. and i really do like that. however if you really want to start using it as a real browser, looking at scripted pages and so on, you better don't do it:
its slow
usually per time unit more expensive
you cant view all the stuff
so it depends on what youu wish to use it for. (ps remember that if you have a phone with a ir port and modem inside (usally 9600bps) you don't need a modem.

Hiya,
I have a Simens S45 with infared port that I'd like to use to connect to the internet. I can connect fine using my modem but would like to be able to do it with the phone. I swith infrared on on the phone and select Ir to phone on the connection then try and log on using Aol 3 for palm. I got the phone number that Aol said to use for the mobile phone network. It starts logging on- the phone makes a connection and says Data Call, meanwhile the pda gets to "Signing In" Then nothing happens until it says PPP timeout.
I would be greaful for any help.
Thanks

Greg,
The Palm Modem for the IIIc is capable of getting you on line and to your email in good time. Consider Eudora on the Palm for your email. It is a nice, simple, app and it is fast. If you get a lot of email with attachments consider SnapperMail. Remember all of this mail takes memory.
As to surfing it is very slow and unless the site is designed for mobile browsing it is too slow to be of use. Palm does offer a large number of site specific apps that go in and get the information fast. Sites like Starbucks, UPS, Mapquest and Bloombergs are quick and easy with the clipper apps.
I am not specifically aware of MindSpring but you should not have a problem.

IIICRules,
Check with your cell phone service to be sure that you have the DATA service as part of your package. It sounds like you don't have that part of the plan.

vollie/DrMud:
Thanks for the replies - I don't have a ir phone at present.
I was hoping to view/respond to mail on the springmail website which has 10mg space provided so the mail isn't downloaded to your machine - but it sounds like it may be hard to navigate. I have no idea if the site is PDA - friendly.

Greg,
There are a number of hurdles for you to take on. First you'll need to know if your cell phone and the Palm can have an IrDA dialog or if you need a driver specific to your phone to enable the communications. Second you will need to determine if your phone service includes data. Third you will want to find a good email app for your Palm (Eudora). Fourth, you will need to contact your Internet service provider to see if you need any specific ID and password configurations to allow access from your cellular.
This is the starting point. Once these are jumped there are the issues of installing the "connection" and "network" info into your Palm's Preferences and the ID and Password into the email app.

I have used the IIIc with the Palm modem with Eudora (which is free) with my Earthlink dialup account and have had no problems.
I avoid all the hassels of the ir connection and the requirement and expense of a data enabled account since I'm not using a cell phone to connect. I can pop the phone line into the modem, connect and check my email in less time then it takes my computer to boot up.
I've use it on the road, also with no problem. All you need is a land based phone that you can plug into the modem (same as with a laptop). Make sure you change the access phone number to one for the local city or you will end up paying long distance rates.
I'd say go with the cheap modem since accessories for the IIIc are getting harder and harder to find.
Good luck.

DrMud,
Thanks for your help. The data service is definately available because I can use the mobile phone to connect to the internet with a PC. I used aol 7 for pc and it worked fine. However this was using a cable-not the IR port.

first of all you might need to add the IR enhancement package freely supplied by palm (whitch is a miracle at itself) and you possibly need a phone driver as well do mine didn't work and after installing the enhanced IR package i found out i didn't need it. 2nd you got to make sure like DRMud sayd you have the srevices and equipment and of course that they are on (IR port on S45 can be diabled) then correctly install the ISP (they might have different call in numbers for mobile use) and if your palm says it's connecting but suddenly hangs up. try changing the script to something like:
Send Username
Send Password
End
Setting up pop servers is usually easy. and getting it mobile takes me about 90 sec. Including full downloads of approx 5mails.

Thaks for your help.
The phones IR port is definately on and it makes a connection to the palm. I am using the special aol program for palm so I don't set up the script stuff like you do when you use network connection (i use it with a modem and it works fine). I have the Siemens phone driver installed but I don't actually know if you have to activate it or anything. I will have a look for this IR enhancement thingy. I definately have Data service enabled cus I use the phone to connect to the internet with a PC.
Thanks. iiicRules
