To avoid the maddening Guest syndrome, I did this : Activesync 3.6 - installed before you install a second sync prog.
IE5 – performed regsvr32 msxml.dll (or the msxml3.dll which works with IE6 !) successfully (before you establish partnership)

In the network connection wizard(Incoming Connections), I added my Username (same as Device name) with pw: my password

Incoming Connections-right click-properties-
In the Incoming TCP/IP Properties, tick only Assign TCP/IP addresses automatically using DHCP- - also tick “calling computer to specify its own IP address” - leave Network access unticked-

Active Sync settings on PC- all boxes are ticked

In the ActiveSync settings on PocketPC-
-go to tools-options-tick USB and Include PC when syncing remotely and connect to nnnn(your computername)-
click on Server-Server Name reads nnnn(your computername)--click Advanced – User Name Your name (I used same as device name/Incoming connections user-) PW:same as Incoming connections user - Domain: nnn(the domain name your machine is on) – Save PW ticked. Logging:Verbose

Start-settings-connections Tab-click connection icon-click modify in the “automatically connect to Work using these settings”, then highlight your connection used and click on Proxy Settings, make sure that only “This network connects to Internet” is ticked -double click on remote sync name connection-then advanced-then TCP/IP tab-tick Use specific IP address 192.168.55.100 – click Name Servers tab make sure “Use server assigned addresses” is ticked.
Make sure you have established a partnership before you dial your connection.
