I have managed to get hold of the above but no documentation, Can anyone give me some information on the connections on the modem i.e. what are they and any information about any manual or d/l pdf for the above. I guess it is easy to connect as I can see the telephone connection but I dont know what the narrow longer 'usb' like type of connector is or does. Any information would be great.

Colin.

There are three sockets at the back of the Travel Modem:

1) The standard RJ11 socket for the modem cable which goes to a landline phone socket.

2) The socket for using a mains adaptor (the same adaptor as used with a Series 5 or 5mx)

3) The socket which is a smaller version of the "Honda" connector used for the PsiWin cable on a 5/5mx etc. This socket was used with a special Ericsson or Nokia cable to be able to use the Travel Modem with certain Ericsson or Nokia mobile phones which didn't have their own built-in modem and IR port. These were old phones with different connectors from those currently used (although I do have the Ericsson cable and an old A1018s phone which I can still use with the modem).

The settings to use with the Travel Modem are:

Name: Psion 56k IR Travel Modem
Speed: 115200
Connect via: Infrared
Fax Class: Auto
____________________________

Speaker: Until call answered
Vol: Medium
Pause: 4 secs
____________________________

Init (reset) string: AT&F
Data: (blank)
Fax: (blank)
____________________________

Flow control: None
Terminal (DSR/DTR) [ ] not checked
Carrier (DCD) [ ] not checked
Modem type: Fixed line

Thanks Mike, is that basically all I need to know. Was there a manual with the modem or was it only a data sheet?. I tried Psion's site as well as other site's but cold not find any information..

Was there any s/w supplied with the modem?

Sorry about all the questions.

I don't actually own one of these modems, although I had occasion to test one in the recent past.

I don't recall it coming with very much in the way of documentation, and certainly nothing anywhere near as helpful as the practical information already supplied to you by Mike.

As for software, I believe the only thing included on disk was a program to facilitate usage of the modem in different countries, and certainly nothing that you would require for normal operation within the UK.

Armed with the settings that Mike has supplied, can I suggest you just get on and give it a try? You never know, it might just work first time!

Thanx for the advice Julie, it actually did work first time, the only problem I had was with my Blueyonder account and password access which I will speak to them about. Once again thanks for the assistance folks

the only problem I had was with my Blueyonder account and password access which I will speak to them about Shouldn't be any problem connecting with Travel Modem and Blueyonder, just use the ridiculous strings of meaningless characters they supply as the Username and Password ;)

As Julie says, the manual, such as it is, isn't particularly useful. A copy of the "EasySwitch" software is attached - it is only a 27kB .SIS file, and its only purpose is to configure the modem for use in different countries.

There are no drivers for Windows supplied with the modem, but I have used it without any problems using Windows' basic built-in "Standard V90 Modem" in conjunction with an external Belkin IR Adapter (with Win98).

Thanks Mike,

The problem I sem to have is an administration mess between Blueyonder departments. I was with dial up and switched to broadband. They seem to have some sort of problem with this and ever since I have had problems with dial up if broadband goes down. Will try again before I go and sit in there cue's for a while.

Cheer's

Colin.

A small addition to the information about EasySwitch. It not only adjusts the modem so it can be used in different countries but it also has files that allow you to use the IR modem with either a Palm or Pocket PC. Given the way things are going, it would be a good idea to have this software since you you'll eventually end up with another OS and the IR modem will still work.

Thanks for the advice Jim. It feels sad to hear you speak like this as I am very new to the Psion but as they are not being produced I know where you are coming from. The last time I used one was when I programmed the Organiser II for my employer and that was not yesterday. I own an Ipaq but much prefer the Psion. Having the keyboard and the orientation of the screen is superb. Maybe its just my age.

Thanx,

Colin.

I have one of the very first IR Travel Modems which only had the country switching software included (although it worked alright with my Pocket PC and no additional software).

However, here is the EasySwitch file which adds Palm support, from Psion's website. It is a .PRC file, which presumably means something to 'Palm' users?

Colin,

They seem to have some sort of problem with this and ever since I have had problems with dial up if broadband goes down. Will try again... You should be able to connect with dialup using the Username and Password supplied for broadband, even if they are different from the settings you were previously using.

Yes Mike that worked fine, one thing I have noticed is that if I try and copy the e-mail message across to the Psion it crashes the Psion resulting in a reset. If I move the message it works fine. Strange.

It might be the version of the software I am using, I will have to check I am using the most up to date versions on the Psion.

Ahh, thanks Mike. I didn't realize that you weren't posting the Palm file also. The one on the Palm website is (suprise!) not the current version so I'm attaching the current Palm version here. For WinCE users, there's no additional software needed - you just set it up using the generic IR modem in the control panel.

Colin,

Yes, it is a little sad - rather like preparing for the funeral of a close relative.:( OTOH, I use both my 5mx and a Clie T665 depending on my needs so having the Palm software available for the IR modem extends its usefulness even now.

Hi Jim,
A question re: Easyswitch for palm, does the prc program work on your Clie? I have a Clie TH55, easyswitch palm versions 1.9 and 2.0, and a Psion 56k Travel Modem. I've tried using the easyswitch program on the Clie to set the country code on the modem. The activity light on the modem blinks a couple of times, then the Clie reports a "fatal exception" error. I have to do a soft reset on the Clie.

Otherwise the Psion 56k Travel Modem dials and connects fine (I'm in Canada). Thanks for any info or clues as to what's happening. The clie TH55 is running OS 5.2.

Thanks,
-Tony
