I've been looking for something much like the Netbook Pro for quite awhile.

I'm sorry that most of you all are ticked off that WinCE is going to be the OS but I wouldn't be getting it if it was not.

There are far more applications, peripherals, and potential customers for this device with WinCE. I realize that nobody that is married to the current OS wants to hear that. (No need to flame me by the way...I've got my flame retardant on. :))

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting my new Netbook Pro when they're available.

Does anyone here already own one? Is anyone going to get one?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin- The Netbook Pro runs winCE.NET which is different that just the regualr winCE on PDAs like the iPAQ. Good luck finding software for it.

I realize that nobody that is married to the current OS wants to hear that.

First, I think that you are a bit misinformed about this forum. People here, generally, are not against NETBOOK PRO WinCE.NET at all, nor are they against the WinCE fans and nor are they against any other of Psion Teklogix' WinCE.NET based devices. It is just that many believe that there would be market size enough to justify a netBook Pro Symbian OS *as well*. In fact, more sales of the WinCE.NET models might give Psion Teklogix the cash flow they need to undertake the relatively small cost involved in developing the Symbian OS versions.

There are far more applications, peripherals, and potential customers for this device with WinCE.

Wrong on all three accounts. Symbian OS is outselling WinCE by at least an order of magnitude today. It is true that Symbian OS in the past had some limitations in drivers and application availability, but this is not true anymore. There is an avalanche of applications coming out for Symbian OS. And support for SDIO, USB, GSM/GPRS cards, an array of media formats etc etc is already there. Even the Nokia 7700 offers a more powerful set of productivity applications than the NETBOOK PRO WinCE.NET does.

Well said, Martin, I totally endorse your comments. :)

I hope that everyone understands that the Netbook Pro is a completely different animal from the current Symbian/Epoc based machine used by many of us here. I do wish that Psion had decided also to give it a completely different name!

Having seen a Netbook Pro, it does indeed have some impressive features, but it doesn't have the same functionality as the current netBook, and in my opinion there are significant limitations, so clearly it is not suitable for anyone looking for a direct netBook replacement. It's not a decision swayed by any kind of sentiment or blind loyalty.

For practical reasons, it's certainly not on my personal shopping list at this point in time, although once people start to acquire these machines, I will be interested to hear reports on how they are being used.

I was also considering going with a Nexio S160 but they've got their own problems also.

Basically I'm looking for something like the following:

1. Instant On / Non moveable parts / Long Battery Life

2. Works with CF2031 Compact Flash Card (Sprint PCS Cell Modem) because I'm already locked into a Sprint PCS contract that my company pays for so I can have wireless access wherever I am.

3. Support 802.11b

4. Form Factor Similar to Nexio or NetBook Pro (basically 800 x N) The PocketPC form factor is just to small for me.

5. Internet Browsing Capable

6. Supports Terminal Server Client (RDP) to connect to Home / Office Servers

7. Be able to view (must) / edit (desired) Excel Spreadsheets and Word Docs.

Can any of the current Psions do all this?

Thanks,

Kevin

old thread but i have a few questions regarding the last post.

where is RDP available for psions? does it work with an 5mx? would be a funny experiment. no i do not want VNC! i mean RDP. to connect to XP Pro.

and office compatibility: sorry but i feel i have to correct the misleading info. office compatibility is actually better on the netbook pro out of the box than on an ER5 machine. pocketword (renamed to wordpad) is built in and will even edit doc formats, not just read them... ER5 needs that crappy nconvert for that. and epoc word will not even open some docs even if read only. or it just screws up the tables (pocketword can't show them perfectly either but it at least retains the text).
the "add on" is textmaker which blews away psionword or nconvert and does work fine
excel editor is also built in the netbook pro as well as powerpoint and pdf viewers and ER5 doesn't have them out of the box

anyway i'm really interested in that rdp, thanks if anyone can answer that :)
