Yes, before it was mentioned that you could download Mapsource and use it instead of the mapinstall utility of the ique variant of Palm Desktop 4.1.

If you háve 4.1 already, the ique version just installs on top of it as you run the installation CD. What's the problem??

My employer has a policy against staff installing personal software on work PC's. However, they will approve Palm Desktop. So, I figured that if I could sync to a standard Palm Desktop 4.1 (without MapSource installed) I could stay in compliance and still use my iQue for work. Have you ever tried this?

It is not clear whether you mean mapsource or possibly mapinstall on the desktop 4.1

Would your employer agree to the Garmin verswion of desktop 4.1 that still contains mapinstall but not Mapsource? In that case no problem. It will still be called Desktop 4.1 in the "About" info so they probably won't care.

Next, if for some reason, the employer would not agree to your using the Garmin supplied Desktop 4.1 , I do believe, in fact I'm almost certain., that you could sync with the standard Desktop4.1. But it ain't always easy to sync with two different pc's.

Now of course, you could install maps and software at home (with mapsoure and it all) and sync work data (calendar, addressbook, memo, todo) at work. Just set the Hotsync custom parameters at the right defaults. You also need to think about the implications for the automatic backup on the desktop. Off my head I don't think it would pose a problem, but if the backup process senses what has been changed since last time, you might run into problems. More input needed on this one.

BTW, There is no option to disable backup in the hotsync customs menu. Be sure to use card backup and be prepared for longer backup times

Tell us your findings on the alternating desktop backup
