I just received a used Palm VIIx from a family member. I am wondering if this is worth messing with. I know they are a bit old, but are they still supported and functional?

It is a fine black & white PDA. Most apps run fine in B&W. You can use it for organizing, finances, games. You can even use it to store important info, but be sure to use an app with encryption. Data files in standard Palm apps are easy for someone to open and to read.

The wireless internet service is expensive, and you can't get standard web pages. Getting driving directions while on the road is kind of slick, though.

There are two people at work close to me that both have the VII today and love them. Yes, they're a few years old, but according to these two - still great. I don't know what services they have, but one was just showing me the different web sites, news links, traffic, weather, directions she can get -

So - yes they're still functional - I couldn't comment on the service and support though.

As JohnKes mentioned - the service could be expensive - neither of my coworkers mentioned it -

If you have a separate cell phone already - it may be worth while seeing if that company has Smartphones as well - and comparing the service plans they offer. Might be in line with what you'd be paying for your existing cell phone and palm.net service individually. Just be aware that the battery life won't be anywhere near as good and you'd need to have the charger available a lot more.

Just another opinion.
