I just spent the better part of the evening trying to setup ActiveSync and my e310. Spent 30 minutes with Toshiba tech support and they couldn't help. Have to call back during regular hours to "escalate" the issue.
Here's what I did (on BOTH a Win98SE and WinXP machines):
1. Install Outlook 2002
2. Install ActiveSync
3. Shut down PC
4. Plug in cradle
4. Restart PC
5. Sometimes it would recognize an "unknown USB"device in the Device Manager. Sometimes I'd have to plug the e310 into the cradle and power it on to get the "unknown USB" device indicator. Well, at least the PC saw something!
Tried deleting/uninstalling/reinstalling//rebooting/load drivers from disc/standing on my head, you name it. Still can't get the PC to recognize the USB device.
Any ideas???

go into the device manager and find the unknown usb driver, go to properties, driver, update driver, put in the cd drive for other locations to look for a driver and itll find the e310 usb driver.

Hey Treyjazz,
Thanks for the tip. However, I tried that already and the Toshiba tech support guy also walked me through that. No luck.
I can't remember the exact error message but when we tried to point to the driver on the CD it said something about there was no information about the device. Any other ideas?
Appreciate any help!

the only thing you can really do is remove the driver and try again. i recommend going into safe mode just in case there is more than one 'unknown usb device' in the device manager, delete them all and try again. putting in the cdrom the first time around might work right. if not then just tell it to install the driver anyway cuz ya know it's the right one. if it still doesn't work try a different usb port.

Did you try the USB driver that's available at the Toshiba support site?

The same happened to me - twice, cos I had to re-install everything after a crash. Second time round, I had forgotten how I managed first time... It didn't exactly help me that the quick guide gives conflicting advice to the setup cd (about plugging or not plugging the cradle). However, both times I managed in the end, without any downloads etc., but I honestly don't know exactly why - someone tell me about computers and logic!!
I believe the main problem is that the Windows (98SE) message about new hardware found is obscured by the setup window of ActiveSync. Probably it's best to delete the information about the "unknown USB device" in device manager, then start from scratch, but letting windows set up the newly found hardware first. Good luck...

Sounds kind of like the problems when I first tried my 310. Found out that during the process, I had to remove and replace the unit from the cradle (seems to me I remember that there was a part of the s/w install during which you were not supposed to have the PPC in the cradle, then slipped it in later). Anyway, I finally lifted it out, replaced it and it hasn't missed a lick since.
Hope This Helps!

If you are still having problems, I wanted to let you know exactly what I did to solve this problem.
First of all, I took the USB connection out of the PC. At that point, I restarted my computer. Once the computer had COMPLETELY reloaded, I then attached the USB connection without the e310 in the cradle. Once the USB connection was in the correct port on the PC, I then placed the e310 into the cradle. I have had lots of problems with this as well. Give this a try, and hopefully it should help you out.

Hi jmilton,
I'm a new users of the tosh 310 and had the same problems...tried reinstalling several times and downloading drivers / updates from the Tosh site, but to no avail!
Took it back to the shop and luckily they did not mind having a look and managed to sort it for me. (went into the device mgr and found no driver installed then installed it by searching for it on the cd) Wish I'd found this web site forum b4 I went back to the shop!
V frustrating considering the time I spent installing drivers unsuccessfully from the tosh web site etc. Anyway, sorted now, but it does seem to be a common problem!
Never had problems installing usb drivers b4 - dig camera, cd writer, printer, mouse etc
