I use iPAQ 3870. Many times when i click the item 'Turn radio ON' in the Bluetooth menu i receive the message ... 'The Bluetooth radio failed to turn on due to insufficient driver memory ... you must perform a soft reset.... '

I still have more than 35Mb RAM left .. How much or what type of memory the Bluetooth needs????

Thanks.

I'm a little more than annoyed by this problem also. I've owned my 3970 for about a month and it's happened only once, but I've read about it happening to others more often. I don't think it's a matter of the amount of main memory that's available. It says "driver memory" so there must be a small portion reserved for other uses that it needs to operate that fills up even though you have lots of other memory available. Typical Microsoft.

I've had the same problem, too. I thought that it might improve after I downloaded version 1.1 (even though 'asset viewer' does not report the newer version), from Compaq's website - but, no...

It seems that the longer you leave it between uses, the more likely it is to lock out. It may be that certain applications hog the same area of reserved memory, I guess.

Still, at least it works after a single reset. Mind you, I use the "permanent PIM" function, so it always takes a while to complete the reset, which is a pain. Maybe they (MS or HP - I don't know if it's an IPAQ or PPC2002 issue) will get a fix out eventually...

its a 'relief' to know its not a problem with my hardware/software.

i use permanent PIM too .. and its really a pain to wait for it to reset :(

so its a common problem ... why is MS not doing anything about it??

Your question of Why isn't MS doing anything about it tells me you're not familiar with the typical way that Microsoft avoids fixing most things like this for years. You learn to live with it or find some alternative to whatever situation you are in. Except for things like this that really bother me, I'd have to say I'm relatively pleased with my 3970.

Ok... seems that i have to give up looking for a solution at this moment.

Btw, same problem with other hardware like Toshiba, Casio etc ?? ;)

Sorry for digging up this old thread, but I think I have found an exlpanation and solution for the problem.

The "insufficent driver memory" error is a conflict with Calligrapher's touch screen driver. How do you solve it?

1) Make sure that "Run Calligrapher at Startup" is not checked in the general preferences.
2) Before you start the Bluetooth Manager, turn off Calligrapher (select the calligrapher input pen icon and a row of icons will pop up. Choose the one for setting the options and select "close")
3) Start the Bluetooth radio. :)

The important thing to remember is to turn off calligrapher first and then start the radio. There is no way of avoiding a soft reset if you turn the bt radio on first, regardless if you stop calligrapher afterwards.

After you start the bluetooth, you can safely turn on Calligrapher again.

Hmmm...
I don't have 'Calligrapher' installed on my 3870, although perhaps this applies to 'Transcriber', too? Anyway, when I select 'Transcriber' and then choose 'Options', there isn't an option "Run Calligrapher (or Transcriber) at Startup". So, for my IPAQ, at least, this isn't the cause - I don't actually use 'Transcriber', either...
Good suggestion, though and worth thinking about other items that may hog that type of memory.
Thx
