I direct this question mainly to Martin Maxwell but also to anyone else who has knowledge on this subject:
Id like to find out more about cellular networks that are optimum for the Communicator to run on. 3G is a very complicated and not fully developed technology. I found this webpage that tries to explain the various directions this technology is going http://3gsolutions.members.easyspace.com/ , and it seems that the network providers are really on the bleeding edge by trying to provide broadband data connectivity over a cellular network. Check the "products" link under the "network" section of this website and you'll see interesting stuff about Nokia and how they are supporting packet switching concept for 3G networks. So my question is, is the GSM networks we have now adequate for what the communicator has to offer, and what more would be optimum in a network for the Communicator to run? I'm not talking ideal of 500 mps, I just mean, what type of network architecture would be good for it too run properly?

Brad,

Thanks for believing that I should be particularly knowledgeable about GSM network performance vis-a-vis certain types of phones. Honestly I am not at all. What I *do* know is that the current Communicator line from Nokia, the 9210(i) and 9290, only supports GSM at 9.6 kbps and a not widely used standard called "HSCDC" or something at 14.4 kbps. Not particularly fast. There is no GPRS support and less so 3G.

The new machine, the Nokia 7700, is not positioned as a Communicator, which the numbering also indicates. However, many believe that its basic architecture will form the *basis* of the next Communicator. The 7700 supports a few 3G standards like W-CDMA, but honestly I have not tested it. Perhaps I will be able to when I go back to Europe over Yuletide and New Year.

cheers
Martin

Oh yes, there is another known limitation for Nokia 9210/9290. Though it runs a later OS version (ER6), the SMTP Authentication problem (as with ER5) is still not fixed. Therefore, no Yahoo etc...

I am not sure at this point whether or not Marcus van Cube's Java workaround for ER5 Psions will also work on the Nokia Communicator 9210/9290. Has anyone tried this?
