I'll mention up front that I'm new to the Blackberry, so please bear with me. The CEO and a division President of my company are both Blackberry 857 users. I recently took over as IT Manager and picked up an 857 myself in order to get a better understanding of the device and the options. Both of my Blackberry users have been complaining about some issues that I'd like to address before handling requests for MORE Blackberry users. Now that I've been using the 857 for about a week I'm wondering whether there is a good solution for my problems.

My predecesor spec'ed and purchase an 857 Internet Edition for both of my users. To be consistent with their setup I purchased the same for myself. I am running Exchange 5.5 but I do not have a BES installed. The current setup is as follows:

1. Create a custom SMTP e-mail recipient directed to the Blackberry address for each Blackberry user on the Exchange Server.
2. Set the delivery option for the primary e-mail account of each user to deliver all e-mail to both the Exchange mailbox and the Blackberry address via the custom recipient.

Sounds simple but works lousy. Both of my users are screaming for the following:

1. E-mail sent from the Blackberry is replied to the Exchange (primary) e-mail account. Better yet, it appears to have originated from the Exchange account.
2. Ability to view attachments (even basic ability).
3. Ability to retrieve more text for a message (the more option appears and a "more request" can be sent, but nothing happens).

They want other things as well, but these are the two most critical. So my questions are:

1. Are my 857 Internet Edition devices compatible with the BES if I decide to go that route? I noticed that there is also an Enterprise Edition with triple DES encryption.
2. Is there a way to set a reply-to address for each account? Does this depend on the provider of the Blackberry e-mail address?
3. What options are there for attachment viewing? Are there different (or better) options available for BES than not?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I think the Blackberry is a great device and has a lot of potential in my organization, but I want to get the small number of users I have (including myself) on track before I accept more users in.

Thanks... Bill

The Internet Edition is not compatible with the BES. Hardware wise yes. However the software is wrong. You'd need to get the right version.

Contact your Internet Edition provider to see if they can set it up so that the BlackBerry's "e-mail address" is hidden and looks like your company address.

Attachment viewing as noted elsewhere can be done through Itrezzo as well as some other companies. I'd suggest to check BlackBerry's website to see the others. As well according to BlackBerry they will offer this with their new Blackberry Server.

your better off geting a BES and Desktop Manager Enterprise edition. Setup your BES and deploy the desktop software to your users.

Your users must run application loader to get the new service books. Call your provider and let them know your devices will be Enterprise editions.

Its allot more stable, faster and secure.

Get the BES, it is worth every penny. Then you can also use the new GPRS Java Blackberries.
