Given that E310 has a USB connection, can't you hook up a third party hardware like a USB wireless access point to use it for Net access?

activesync acts as a proxy when you do things on the internet with your e310 connected to your computer--therefore connecting to a node on the network wouldn't work because it couldn't go through activesync and neither side would know what the other was saying.
