Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Nr70v/u -> Nr70v/j ?!?
I'm studying Japanese, and I was wondering if it would be possible to flash my NR70V/U to be a NR70V/J so I can do my Japanese homework on it. Does anyone know how I could do this? I searched Google and so forth, but everything is on going from J->U or else is in Chinese (which I can't read).
I know it would involve using JackFlash or FlashOS, but can't seem to find the files I would need to use them.
TIA

Hello TIA,
I have an NR70V/J and would suggest thinking of the following to you before flashing your device:
Do you have access to the /J-model manuals? Is your Japanese good enough to read menus, manuals and error messages? Do you know the details of the Sony IME? (There is a 10-page discussion of this in the /J manuals.) I do not think a /J flash will give you the ATOK application which drastically simplifies kanji conversion.
Add-on applications for non-/J models may not work correctly. (DBCS to ASCII date conversion often screws up.) You will need to review them all. Titles and headings and menus will all be in Japanese. Address book line entries will be opposite order.
If you are confident that you will not loose current utility by converting to Japanese, GAMBATTE. If not, install one of the shareware IME and kanji dictionaries on your current model. Or finally, buy one of the low-end Sony Japanese models. You can put your current data into the Japanese model by SEKIGAISEN (IR) and do your homework on the Japanese model which will have all the IME add-ons included.
KI WO TSUKETTE NE!
Actually, I have been using an N600C (Japanese obviously) up to now, but recently got the NR70V/U as a gift. It is basically useless to me without Japanese capability, but seems like a really nice unit otherwise. The Add-ons like CJKOS and J-OS (which I used with my old PEG-N300) are just not as good as the built in functionality (mostly in the area of fonts). I can buy a copy of ATOK if required, but I already use Gokuraku Pen, so probably wouldn't need it. ATOK only adds word completion and expandable dictionary to the clie's basic functionality IIRC (I think drastic is an overstatement). I don't use any complex add-ons and mostly I get them from muchy anyway. As for current utility, I use my old N600C for everything except playing MP3 and taking quick picture or 2, and with a N70V/J those would work the same.
Thanks for the warnings though.
BTW: TIA means "Thanks In Advance"
Again, thanks

Hello cujo,
My apologies. I underestimated your knowledge and the background research you have done for this.
I will ask a colleague in Nagoya, and if he has any useful information, I will post it here. It certainly sounds like you are ready to proceed. If you do, I would be interested in hearing about it.
I expect you already know this; an interrupted flash may destroy your device. Put your device in the cradle and hold it firmly in place with an elastic band. Do not do it during a thunder storm or other event which could cause a power interruption. (I install and implement mainframe operating systems for systems with never-down requirements. As a result, I tend to be demanding in my requirements and conservative in my changes.)
I understand your desire to have full function in Japanese, and hope you can do it. Let me know.

Cujo,
I hear you.
I have both the U and the J models. (With out camera) But have found I do not need both. I bought the J model in Tokyo. The kanji keyboard and input methods of the Sony are very cool.
This comes with the original box and it has all the manuals and extra app software mentioned by the other poster. Its screen has all the pixels working, which I can't say for the U model- my U model has two pixels that are flakey.
Anyways, if you want to trade/swap/purchase/bargain I would be willing. Just email me or reply here.
thanks,

Cujo,
Oh yes... if you were interested, I forgot to mention, the NR70/J I have for sale/trade, also comes with ATOK from the factory.
cheers,
DUp
Thanks Mason-san...
DrawnUp, where are you? A trade would be good, but the question is how to do it? If you are close by, a face-to-face meeting would work. I'm in (Southeast) Michigan, USA. If you're to far away for a face-to-face, then maybe something can be worked out, but I'm not sure exactly how....

cujo,
I'm not sure how to do it, but you can find my email for this profile somewhere on PDASTREET. But to make it easier: it is :
- hms2003
- (@t)
- a t t bi
- . -
- com (forgive the formatting, but we all hate spam bots.)
Write me!
Then we can talk about it over the phone and decide what works best. I'm in Massachusetts. Just, got back from Georgia, I liked it much more than I thought I would. The drivers on the roads there are much nicer than the ones in Mass. Anyways, waaaaaaaaaaaaay off topic, no?

DrawnUp-
I tried to email you but got no reply. Are you at att.com? Your address is a little to obfuscated...
confused but not a spambot,

BTW: I'll probably be in Boston around Nov 9th. Maybe we can do a trade then?

Hi cujo -
I should be around then. Might be in nyc for part of that weekend, but we can work out something.
But would like to sell/ trade the unused J unit pretty soon.
You can try the attBI.com address. that is the ATT broadband domain. attbi.com should work!
best,
DUp
