Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Nec Mobilepro 780 turns on by itself
Hello Everyone:
I have just obtained a used Nec mobilepro 780 a couple of
weeks ago instead of the Hp jornada 720 (No repair facilities
if needed for the 720). Recently I've noticed that if I turn off
my 780 and leave it sitting, about 3-5 minutes later it turns
itself back on. Now I have nothing scheduled in my calendar,
so there is no reason for it to turn on by itself. Has anyone
else experienced this problem, and if so how did you correct it.
Thanking all in advance for their help.

Does it turn itself on when the sync cable is not plugged in or only when sitting with the sync cable plugged in?
If the cable makes a difference, then you are getting some spurious signals out the serial port that are activating the pda.

Hello Rich:
No my Mobilepro turns on without any cable attached to it.
If I just leave it sitting on my desk, no connections to any
other equipment, and it just turns itself on. It will do this
even if I have the Ac adapter connected. If it is receiving
sporious signals, they must be internal. i have re-installed
the Service pack 1 upgrade to see if this helps, but it does
not.

And you did a complete hard reset, the one where you push the reset switch that resides inside behind the battery?
Hello Rich:
Yes, In fact I have tried a hard reset four (4) times setting
it back to factory specs, using it until the battery was almost
dead, fully recharged it (backup battery is brand new, and I
left it with the factory setting.), did NOT do a system restore,
and then turned it off, with no cables or power cord plugged
in, and left it on my desk. About 17 minutes later it turned
on by itself. I have run out of ideas, cannot find any
reference to this particular problem anywhere. Since the unit
work okay otherwise I will have to deal with it until I come
across a fix. The other option is to return it to Nec for repair,
which since I have no warranty, may be expensive. Any and
all ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Hfd

Just a thought. Does your on/off button seem to have good travel - similar to the other keys? If not it might be sticking and giving problems.
Another trick that seems to work on some units that are having wierd problems is to do take both batteries out (main and bu) and leave it sit for an hour or so.
It that doesn't help and in light of the other suggestions I'd guess that you might have something internal :-)

I think I'm thinking along the same lines as Exscentric is...a possible hardware problem with the mechanics of the on/off switch.
I'm wondering if perhaps there are heat changes or something causing some expansion that is activating the power switch.
My question now is: does it make any difference whether the unit is open or closed?
You might just try and disassemble the unit and air blow it out or clean the contacts of the switch with some electrical contact cleaner, those type of things and see what happens.
You only other option sounds like picking up a crappy 780 with a good motherboard on eBay for around $75 and swapping them out.

Hello Everyone:
The problem could be the on/off button, but it seems
to be working properly with good travel on & off. As
to the motherboard, since the unit works fine otherwise
I will leave it alone as it is. if the problem gets worse or
another problem develops, well it's gone and I will then
get me one of the new Nec 900's.
To Rich & Exscentric, thanks.
