It seems to me that the MP770 has a 12 bit display. I've had this suspicion for a long long time, but never really bothered to check it out (I had concluded that the ugliness of the colours comes from the fact that the display is bigger hence the ugliness is more pronounced on a big screen than a small one).

Now that my girlfriend bought the MP780, I was able to place them side by side and I'm quite sure that she has a 16 bit display and I have a 12 bit one.

What gives? Can someone give me an explanation of this?

Bingo...I too own both...4096 colors on my 770 and 65K on the 780.

But, with some software, you can view 65K colors on the 770...not much, but some applications have their own video drivers built into the software.

To be honest though, I got along just fine for a long time with the 770....heck no matter what, it is better than the best gray-scale devices...

Software like what? I want I want! (nono not the actual program...just the name :) )

What about the wallpaper -- is there someway to make it 16 bit? I have this really nice OSX wallpaper that I modified...and it shows up so beautifully on my girlfriend's unit, while kinda blotchy on mine.

BTW I have smalltweak for CE2.11 -- doesn't seem to work for the desktop OR PIE.

And finally...didn't NEC advertise the 770 as 16 bit? Hmm...do we have on our hands another Jornada/m100 incident?

Didn't mean to get you too excited. It is just that I had a program once that used graphics in some fashion and the screen showed more than 4096 colors. I don't remember what one it was, but will see if I can find it.

All of my pictures I loaded into my desktop and using my graphics program actually reduced the colors to 4096 so they would look good on my 770.

Used to use some graphic viewer, but ended up downloading and installing a program called Pocket Browser 16. It is another web browser like Explorer, but it works nice off line, and will load and view jpg, bmp, gif pictures with ease, thus doubling as a picture viewer.

Will check for that old program this weekend, can't even remember the name right now....

Amazingly, I was sitting here playing chess on the computer and suddenly, the name of the program I used to use on my 770 came to me. It was called Image Expert 2.1 and I think it was made by Sierra.

I remember that I had looked at some pictures on the 770 and they looked crappy, but when I looked at them through that software, they looked good. I remember some button on the software that said "optimize" or something like that.

Anyway, wish I still had the software, sold it when I sold my 770. I should have copied the CD first...duh, I'm always a day late and a dollar short....

I figure the lapse time between when I started trying to remember the software, and now was about 24 hours, so by calculating my synaptic response I think it is safe to say....safe to say....hmmm, what was I going to say.....maybe I'll remember it tomorrow.

I have the CD...but it's only a 20 day trial so you're not missing much. I never bothered to install it...maybe I will tonight.

Now for the ringer. Theoretically the only difference between the 770 and the 780 is the scroll wheel and the faster processor for the latter right? If so, then how come the 780 can show all those colours but not the 770? And hey, they did advertise the 770 as 16 bit...as they did the 780.

I feel kinda jipped now...I want something that runs on 16 bit...hmm...maybe it's time to look at the Intermec 6651, although I absolutely love the form factor of the 7xx series.

As for your synaptic response -- they say that as one repeats a task by practicing, the number of neurons for that task decreases and the synapse increase in strength -- it's called plasticity I think.
So keep at it! :)

I think they are being "cagey" when they say 16 bit. I assume the processing is 16 bit, but the color addresses use a 12 bit memory address.

The Intermec is nice, but I think if I ever buy another handheld, I'm going for something with more compatibility. I played with a friends Toshiba Libretto for a while, it was nice, but the keyboard was totally useless for a touch typist.

I am strongly considering the Fujitsu P1110. Not all that much larger than the Nec 7X0 series, full size touchscreen, and is about the same weight, albeit an inch or so taller....but something that runs a standard Windows OS....I could use all my software with it!
