I charged it Monday. Barely used it Tuesday. Turned it on Wednesday, and it reacted as if I had hard reset it.
Hmm... lost all of my data... still had 85% battery on my main battery.... and 0% on my backup battery.
Dell tells me that my backup battery has died because the life span is only 5-6 months. I can deal with that, but I lost all of my data while the main battery still had pleanty of charge.
I've replaced the battery, and they're supposed to call me back Saturday to verify that the battery is still good. It will be of course, that's not my issue (draining of the backup battery). My problem is that it lost my data while the main battery still had charge. By the time my backup battery dies again, the warrenty will be long since expired.
I think I need to escalate this to someone higher up.
Am I being unreasonable in wanting a replacement over this?

It's quite possible (probable?) that you have some problems with the connections between your main batteru and your unit. Perhaps they are flakey and causing the battery to switch to the backup frequently? Then when the backup battery was dead - hard reset.
My Axim in now 8 months old and the original backup battery is at 100%. I don't buy the fact that they have 5-6 month lifespan without any use.
So, to answer your question, I'd say definitely - there is some sort of issue. Perhaps removing and reinserting the main battery will make the contacts connect better?

I ran some tests after replacing the backup battery to see just what it does. I removed the backup battery and left it out for 7 days. I did a full backup first and since it was a slow period for me I could take some chances.
Results: No problems and no loss of data!!

I'm using a Dell Axim 5 for less than 4 weeks and I have encountred the same problem, my Axim was even in the cradle for 3 days and charging. I toke the PDA and turned it on, message that the back-up battery needs to be replaced. I also lost all my data. So it seems that the axim has a problem. i replaced my back-up battery and start getthering all my lost data as much as possible. :)

:( I just ran into the same problem. I've had my Axim about 8 to 10 months. The main battery had a full charge. But the backup went out and I lost everything that was on built-in memory (I do store most of my info to an SD card). What I don't know how to do is restore the PDA to the Original profile name. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated.
This is a big problem for the Axim, though. Loosing a backup battery shouldn't cause this much grief. I have been very happy with my Axim up til this problem. And I support several users with Axim's who I'm sure don't use their CF cards for storage. Dell needs to address this issue.

Well, Dell blew me off back in December when I called with the problem..... claimed the battery was at fault, and not warrantied.
Today, my backup battery is dead again. Thankfully, I didn't lose data this time. I'm backing my Axim up now, and will be heading to CVS for a replacement shortly.
My warranty period is up, but I am going to call today with the expectation that they will replace the unit since my original call on the same problem was within the warranty period.
We'll see. I can't keep dealing with the possibility of data loss. I may go several days to a week between sync's and don't really need to be worry'n about losing data.

Does x3i suffer from this problem? Or is it too new to tell?
