Hi all

I've been trying to send a fax using my MC218 and an Ericsson T39. Can anybody help with the settings? The phone dials but hangs up almost immediately, and I get a "No carrier detected" error message. Any help most appreciated.

Thanks

Colin

just to check - have you successfully used this combination to do anything else, e.g. internet connectivity? This will identify whether this is a simple modem problem or something more complicated that is fax-specific.

Wow, thanks for the superfast reply. You're right, I should have mentioned that. E-mail (Message on the MC218) is working fine. I've left all the modem settings in the control panel as they are, and have just tried with all the different fax classes. Just a thought: I was only doing it to see if it works (thinking it might come in handy one day), so I was trying to send a fax to myself - couldn't be my fax machine, could it?

Right. Since the modem works okay for data calls, then its unlikely to be the fault of any of the general modem settings.

Do you hear whether the fax machine picks up the call? It does sound as though the Psion is calling the remote machine, then bombing because it doesn't hear the appropriate fax tones, but if it closes the connection before the other end picks up, then it must be a problem with the Psion settings.

Is your modem speaker on? Can you tell whether the fax machine is picking up or not?

Thanks again. I've tried checking and unchecking everything, loudspeaker on/off, to no avail (I've also tried sending a fax to a friend). Any other ideas?

Hi Colin

How are you connecting? PC Card, Travel Modem or mobile phone? Can you confirm the make model of the item aswell.

On your modem settings. Leave the class as Auto for the time being. Go to the Initialisation tab and confirm if there is anything in the Fax init. string box.

On the Options tab, what is the Loudspeaker in use set to? Never, Until call answered, Always, After dial, until answer. Try setting to Always so that you can at least hear what is going on. Set Volume to Quiet although this will still be quite loud.

Open your System folder on your C: drive and in the root directory there should be a file called FAXLOG.txt. this is a log of your last fax transmission. Can you attach this to your next reply if you manage to find it.

Hopefully we can manage to sort this out for you.

Si

The "No Carrier Detected" message usually indicates that the phone hasn't been enabled for Fax calls, which is not the same as being enabled for Data calls. However, there was also a problem with Fax on the T39 phone, which Ericsson were aware of, but I don't know if the problem was ever sorted.

oops, well done Mike. I must remember to read post properly, in furture !! Yep there is definitely a problem with fax calls on the T39 as I used to have a similar problem. Only had the phone for a couple of weeks so as per Mike, I am not sure if it was ever sorted.

Thanks all for your kind concern - I'm sorry that it turned out I was wasting your time! (Unless anyone knows a fix for the problem with the phone!)
