Samsung SPH-I330 losing connection

Have an Samsung SPH-I330 phone/PDA and it keeps on losing the connection to the computer it syncs with. Essentially on setup, it creates a virtual com port (usually com4) for the USB connection to sync. Every so often, the system drops the com4, and the handheld can't sync. The only way I have found to correct the problem is to uninstall everything related to the handheld, and re-install. PC is Windows XP

Any thoughts on how to prevent the loss of communication?
