I've just managed to pick up a Psion 56K + FAX & 10/100 Ethernet Gold Card on Ebay for £40 which is a bit of a bargain so I'm finally going to get myself a network card for my desktop PC and see what I can get working between my PC and my netBook (FTP and internet access mainly). I'm also interested to see what I can do with Linux (I have a dual boot PC) and my netBook (access the various local servers (web, mail and FTP) which I use for testing). This is a great step towards my ultimate goal of setting up a wireless network and it will provide a great primer since I know nothing about networking PC or network protocols.

As a follow-up and to get me ready for my networking trials I am hoping that someone can give me some advice about software I need ...

For telnet to my Linux box I have found the following. Does anyone have experience of any of these?
- JTelnet (http://www.mcaleely.com/freeware/JTelnet/).
- Mocha EPOC Telnet (http://www.mochasoft.dk/psion.html#telnet)
- Hermes (http://www.iota.demon.co.uk/psion/hermes/hermes.html)
- NewTelnet (http://www.newnet-marketing.de/html/newtelnetdesc_psion.html)

I'm also after a SSH Telnet client. I know that I can get a Java one from Teklogix but does anyone know of any others?

A Virtual Network Comupter client (presumably Java) would also be good to have. Any ideas?

TIA.

I use the Mindterm SSH client (www.mindbright.se/mindterm/) on a netBook to manage my Smoothwall firewall - this is a Java client admittedly but it works fine.

You can get a Java VNC client that runs on netBook from any of the main VNC mirrors. It is slow as hell when talking to Windows (usable but frustrating speed if you know what i mean).

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a go.

I thought that the VNC client might be a bit slow. It may be better with Linux (which is what I am thinking of using it with.

I have tried limping along with the EPOC VNC client attached to a beefy Solaris box, and it was painful. Had a lot of "wow" factor for impressing friends, but I wouldn't dare use it for production. Far too slow.
