Yesterday all detail for North America disappeared from my Mapsource, although Europe still worked fine.

So I uninstalled my North America City Select and my Europe Metroguide and reinstalled them. Now I get an error code and can't open Mapsource 5.0. I also can't upgrade to mapsource 5.4 because when I run the update download I get a message saying that there is no previous version of MS on the computer. I even reinstalled my Palm Desktop. Mapquest works fine with just Europe if I uninstall NACS, but stops working again if I reinstall it.

I called Garmin and they spent about 1/2 hour on the phone with me twice, reinstalling software, before saying that they had to go and call me back when the reinstallation was done. I spent half of the day with them and never finished.

If anyone is interested or knowledgeable the important part of the error code seems to be : DSK_FIRSTBOOTRECORD.CPP-268-4.10

This is probably a Windows issue for some reason - if it were my machine and I was stuck without any other means: I'd backup the registry and then go in and delete all of the references to Mapsource and City Select.

Once this deletion was done : I'd reboot and then reinstall both programs. You'll have to unlock them again of course.

I do not advocate doing this is less this is a last resort and you are comfortable with editing the registry.

If you post back as ask "how to edit the registry", then I'll really advise against it.

But - this is what I would do. :)

jdcrowley,

I had the same thing happen (also out of the blue) to my XP machine at the office and haven't been able to resolve it yet (to include clearing the registry and a reinstall, which makes no sense.) I can, however, still us Mapinstall which puzzles me. I finially put City Select on my home XP machine and haven't had a problem on that machine yet.

Looking forward to Garmin's (or your) solution to this problem.

Well, I reinstalled the Palm Desktop and NACS and I'm almost back to zero, which means that I can now open Mapsource, but I still can't see the details for North America and I still can't update it to version 5.4. I'll see what Garmin can do for me tomorrow.

The trick seems to be zapping the Palm Desktop program as well. Perhaps it's the conduits from it to MapSource causing the hang-up.

I'm working fine now.

Finally uninstalled everything, deleted all related folders, cleaned out the registry, and reinstalled everything, and everything works fine now. I should have done a full clear and reinstall at the start. All of the data and programs on my iQue were still there after I hotsynced.
