The last three 3v lithium back up batteries for my son's 3c have lasted only a day or so before showing 'replace' on start up. Two of them were quite cheap CR1620s from a cheap jack place but the one I bought him last weekend was a decent £6-ish Varta... same thing...... is this a usual occurence.. any ideas?

Hello,
Lithium batteries are a great choice for a backup battery because of the length of time that they retain their charge. It is much longer than Alkaline or Rechargeables.
First of all, make sure that you have any and all crucial data backed up to an external device or PC.
Second, make sure that the terminals for the backup battery are clean and in their proper positions. Also, make sure that the battery fits snugly in the compartment.
If neither of these work, try a soft reset. If no luck, try a hard reset.
Be patient and good luck.
Hope this helps.

The last three 3v lithium back up batteries for my son's 3c have lasted only a day or so before showing 'replace' on start up If the main batteries are good, this is most likely to be due to a poor contact. Try cleaning the contact and gently bending it to get a better connection.

As Mike McC implies, the problem could be related to the main batteries. Check 'Battery Information' (Psion key +B) and 'Usage Monitor (Psion Key + U). Wriggle the main batteries around or try replacing with known good ones. You might be able to measure any drain current from the back-up battery by judicious use of a meter, although I have not tried it!
