I use an excel spreadsheet as a checkbook. I was under the impression that the Palm Zire 71 read and edited excel files.

I am new to PDAs but can't seem to figure this out. I tried to add the file to the expansion card but it said the install to card synchronization failed.

How do you go about doing this?

if i understood you , you need to read excel documents on your palm and edit if neccesary. in order to do it you need to install a program that handles office documents on the palm ( word, excel ppt ). you can not read these documents as they are. the program translate your office documents to a format that palm os recognizes.
the programs i worked with are :
documents to go
quickoffice premier
you can also try program that work only with excel sheets
( without word and ppt ) :
tinysheet 4.25
quicksheet 6.0
you can find all these programs in : http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.category&catid=11&sid=A2882761-7887-42D4-A145A4CEC18AB135
good luck !

That's correct. I was looking at the specs on the Tungsten T (comes with DataVis 6.0) and that allows the excel, word, ppt, etc. but then I opted for the Palm 71. Guess the more you spend the less you get (sometimes).

I will check out the thread you linked to and appreciate the response.

I work with "Documents To Go" (DTG), software you can find in the cd #2 you got with your Zire.

DTG translates files from EXCEL (adding a menu in EXCEL) to Palm format; then, you can work in your file either from your Zire and your desk computer. In the same way, you can create a new file from your Palm in an EXCEL mode and this allows you to work in this file either from Zire and EXCEL.

More... as DTG allows you to work with the SDcard, you can store the file on the SDcard. Using a SDcard reader, this allows you to work directly with the EXCEL file from EXCEL and from Zire, each one recognizing changes from other without any problem and, more important, without hotsync mode.

For the kind of work I have to do, this full compatibility is a very, very great thing.

Unfortunately, my second CD doesn't have DTG or anything like it. I need to get a copy.

Thanks for the information. It was helpful.

Downloaded the trial version of DTG and seems okay but when re-calcing a sheet, it takes a loooonnnnnggggg time. Is there a way to re-calc just the cell?

Using my 32M card, it is very quick, with DTG and Palm Photo. But when using 256M, both are slow. Using camera with 256M is a nightmare: passing from photo mode to pictures mode takes more than one minute without any possible stop.

I don't understand this difference; maybe this have to do with the management of the memory. Maybe there is something I do wrong: but up to now, I do not figure it.

I noticed similar with RealOne: using the bigger card, it takes a moment of silence when I check the clock in the middle of a song. Not a big deal, in this case: the moment of silence is less than 1/10 of second, just as long as I can notice it. But... it is that.

Does someone know about performance of our Zires concerning the management of bigger SD card?

chichille8,
I've got 256 sandisk SD card, mind you, the ultra one, and it is very quick, not as the internal memory, but quite quick.

Here a new player in the SDcard field:

dane-elec (http://www.dane-elec.fr/us/)

Seems very agressive, with lower prices. French stuff, with lot of data available in their site.

Anyone knows about the quality of their SDcard?

I did some tries and discovered that I must minimaze the number of photos in the working directory (DCIM) in the SDcard, in a way to allow PalmPhoto to work quickly.

Problem was that too much photos in this directory bring too much working to do for PalmPhoto.

Far lot quicker, now, with less than 20 photos in DCIM !
