Hi
I am receiving the following message when trying to install SIS programmes onto my S7 (using 'install new program'): "This version of EPOC install cannot install unicode programmes" - at which point the installation terminates (programme in question on most recent occasion was 'Opera' web browser). I have tried other methods of transferring programmes between my PC and my Psion (e.g. drag and drop) but without success. I have not experienced this problem in the past (and have successfully downloaded 'Opera' in the past, but uninstalled it when I ran into the much celebrated Psion/ISP connection difficulties discussed in detail in recent months on this site).
I have recently upgraded my PC OS from Win 98SE to XP Home. Could this have anything to do with it? I am running PsiWin 2.3.
Thanks in anticipation for any assistance.

Ciao Graham,
just one very quick thought before some more technically prepared people reply to your qyestion: ER5 machines such as S7 do not support Unicode programs. which app. are you actually installing?

Double click "My Psion" on the desktop, cancel the connection attempt and, from the Help menu, select "About PsiWin 2.3" to see exactly which version you are running.

Hi Gianluca
The programme I am trying to install is the Opera web browser - downloaded from the Opera website some time ago and resident on my PC for the best part of the last year (ref. R51420e.zip and containing the files Er5.SIS - which won't load and Stdlib.SIS which did install). When I have dragged the Er5 file to my desktop and then dragged it into the 'Install' folder on my S7 - the installation will start and proceed, but aborts about 2/3 of the way through. Either way I can't get the programme to install and/or run.
What confuses me is that I have previously installed and run this programme sucessfully on my S7, so I don't understand why it's not cooperating now. I took it off my S7 when I ran into the internet freezing problem which has been the subject of lively debate on this site. I hadn't realised at that time that others were experiencing similar problems and thought there was perhaps a bug in the Opera programme.
Incidentally, I tried to download and install a TCPIP patch to overcome the 'freezing' problem (recently recommended by some kind person from the Forum), but got the same 'unicode' error message, even though I understood this to be a Series 7-specific patch. I dragged and dropped the patch into my S7 'install' folder, and although it seemed to copy over OK, it wouldn't run. I therefore uninstalled it, but interestingly my 'old' S7 'Web' programme, which used to freeze, just like 'Opera', now runs smoothly and without locking up at all!
From your reply it sounds as though I am trying to install the correct files ('Er' ones), so I am totally confused.
I hope this response makes some sense, but iI hope you will forgive me if I am a little computer naive
Many thanks
Graham

I am using PsiWin 2.3.2 (Build 144). Could this be the problem and if so where could I download a version of 2.3.3?
Thank you for your attention
Graham
PS Does installation of PsiWin 2.3.3 require unistalling my existing version first, or can I simply run the updated version and overwrite the existing version?

where could I download a version of 2.3.3www.psion.com/downloads/pc/psiwin2/233/english.exe (http://www.psion.com/downloads/pc/psiwin2/233/english.exe)
You must uninstall 2.3.2 with "Add / Remove Programs", then run the attached registry cleaner before installing 2.3.3
