Looking for help to set up a dialup connection via the Infrared port to my mobile phone (GPRS). Hope that someone knows how to solve this.

I created a new connection chosing the infrared port as a modem from the dropdown list. When trying to use this connection the Netbook Pro reports that "port is not available, it is either configured incorrectly or another program is using it."

Can not figure out what has gone wrong. Using the following connection preferences:
Baud rate 115200
Data bits 8
Parity none
Stop bits 1
Flow controle none

Not aware of any other programme using the Ir port.

I know that this is an obvious question, but have you turned on IR on your mobile phone?

Regards.

I goes wrong before linking up to a phone, If you want to set up a new dial up connection you can only chose between a hayes compatible modem on com and Infrared port.

If you chose the infrared port as modem it than tell you that this port is not properly configured.

Understood from other forums that CE doesn't come standard with a generic Irda modem driver. Here you can download this driver for Windows CE 2.0 www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/h/0005.asp, tried that but doesn't seem to work.
Guess we have to find a similar driver for CE .NET 4.2

Have you already successfully used this phone for a GPRS connection? If not, it might be worth checking that your cellphone service provider has enabled it on your account - I don't know your location, but in the UK we generally have to arrange this separately from our GSM connection.

Sure it's a Ecrisson T39m and works quite well over GPRS with my psion 5mx.

If this driver does not exist, some of the text in the Netbook Pro manual do not reflect the reality.

Guess I may have to switch to bluetooth to extablish a connection between the Pro and the Phone.

This doesn't work because you are trying to use the raw IR device rather than the com port it is connected to. I got this working by looking through the registry until I found the existing hayes compatible definition for com1, duplicating it, changing the port to com3 and the name to "My IR Phone".

Save, warm reboot, and everything works find. The phone dials no problem through IR.

Wow that sounds good, did you create a new driver under active drivers?

Can you please give a slightly clearer instruction as I've never worked in the register before.

thanks

Here is what I did. Bear in mind that I have never edited the registry before either, and rarely use Windows machines of any type.

What I did was based entirely on guesswork (and what somebody else said they had done on a Win98 laptop!)

If you crash your Netbook doing this, I probably won't be able to help you...

Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ExtModems

Create a new key called: Nokia

containing:

DeviceType REG_DWORD 1
FriendlyName REG_SZ "Nokia on COM3:"
Port REG_SZ COM3:

Then exit, reboot your machine, and create a new connection using this as the modem.

ok, I'll try and report back later,

It's not working, the new modem on com3 appears nicely in the pulldown meny as a modem but the communication apparently follows the network driver and not the modem driver. Ir eye blinks nicely but the phone doesn't understand.

bit stuck now,

This sounds like a comms setup problem. I'd suggest downloading pockettty from http://dejavusoftware.com and using that to talk directly to your phone first. You should be able to send 'AT' commands through the IR port and see your phone respond to them. If it doesn't , try tweaking the comm settings on both the phone and the Psion.

It's working by IrDA modem with my Nokia 6600 mobile.

I put support for IrDA dial-up connections by simply adding new entries into the registry \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ExtModems\IRModem

I attach the example.

Finished the registry entries it's important to make a soft-reset.

Thanks for this screenshot, basically it looks the same on my machine but it doesn't work...

Now installed the socket bluetooth CF card and that works perfectly both on normal dial in and on GPRS, expensive but more convenient. So i'll stick to bluetooth,

thanks
