Difference between Main Memory and Built-In storage

I recently purchased a new Dell Axim x3i. I also purchased a 256 MB SD card. When I go to save a document or file, how do I save it to the card?? I want to save everything possible to the SD card so I can format it as I please.
Also, how do I tell how MUCH storage space is left on the actual SD card??? I have a feeling my Axim isn't reading the card.
Any information will help.

Use file explorer to move files to your sd card. Open them with file explorer. Edit them, when you hit ok to close the document it will save.

Check the space by going to settings, hit system, then memory. Hit the tab that says storage card. Click the botton that says File store and it will open a drop down menu. Look for yoiur memory card. Click it and it will tell you how much is used, how much is left and how much there is.
