I'm brand new to the palm world and just beginning to enjoy my new Zire 71 (bought just a couple weeks ago), and I managed to scratch it. Smack in the middle of the screen. I know I should have used a screen protector, but it's too late for should-have's. I can't find any information online about what to do now. Any suggestions? Thanks much.

Try searching Ebay for new screens...you should be able to get a new one for under $50.

Not funny, as it is a new one...

But the scratch itself is not a big thing. Mine is scratched twice without really annoying me.

Is it a big scratch?

what do you mean by 'not funny'? I was being serious!

Some of the older screens seemed to be improvable. But the newer screens cannot be "cleaned" of light scratches and if its a deep one it will stay.
Screen replacement is not a simple matter and I know of no source for the screens outside of Palmone.
THe Palm Extended warranty does cover screen damage.

this is the best place to find replacment PDA screens and other parts, but it might take a few more monthes for them to get Zire71 screens

good luck,

Thanks for the replies, but I can't find a Palm Zire screen anywhere. And even if I did, how would I install it? (I assume the unit doesn't just come apart very easily ... ) And yes, it's a pretty nasty scratch. Every time the stylus glides over it you certainly feel the bump.

Same for me... and twice, actually.

But as these scratches don't affect any software, I live with them.

does the screen still respond correctly to the stylus?

The majority of scratches have no effect on the digitizer unless there is a big bump that causes a skip or double tap.

Right.

Here, scratchs got absolutely no effect on using the screen, except this light bad feeling on the stylus when hitting a scratch.

Many people have commented that putting a screen saver on makes the scratches they got far less troublesome, so I'd give that a try.

I'd also see what PalmOne has to say.

ok.. first I work for Palm.. so let me give you some free advice and save you a call to tech support.

You have 1 year warranty.. that does not include misuse or damage to screens.. So.............

#1 if you replace the screen yourself you have voided your warranty.. 100% poof .. it's gone. Just because you opened the thing up. So if you do this.. make sure you can do it completely..

#2. if you purchased palms extended warranty with free screen replacement - this is a one time deal.. so usually people use this for when they crack it.

#3 if you haven't bought the extended warranty do it... it will save you a lot of $ and comes with tech support now too.

#4 a repair on that palm is $125.00 for the scratch if you are in the USA. So why not get a screen protector and see if it's livable until it absolutely HAS to come in for repair.. if it does end up in repair for something that is covered under normal warranty than they will probably replace the screen at the same time.

Hope this helps

Sporkman... I just realize that you misunderstood me in my first text. I am confused and I apoligise: actually, I was responding to Monica's first text.

Apalmtech, thank you very much for your info. And the great point, here, is that you show by yourself that someone of Palm guys is looking at our troubles and notes. Very great, according me.

:) :)

I guess I can't stay away from work.. it's my day off and what am I doing? answering posts.. LOL

Actually Im one of the last of the techs for Palm.. that is for the USA tech support.. soon it will all be in india.. sorry to say.. there are only a few of us left to be phased out..

oh well that's how technology grows.. it moves to india.. LOL

good luck with your palm.. feel free to ask if you have any questions..

Same for me, you know, in a different domain...

I work all day long with 2 computers in front of me, with 6 very wide computer screens just above my head and, in plus, my Palm always open on my desk.

And now, as I am off, I am here doing my rest in these forums.

Sign of times, I presume!

According to you, how long should be working Zire 71 ?

For me, I expect it will be working well for 2 years. But I know that the normal life time for everybody'using is far less than 2 years: it is close to 1 year, as I understand it.

I have customers with palm pilot prof going strong.. and 111's etc.

because of the camera and the colour etc.. the battery isn't going to last as long as say a monocrome handheld.. I wouldn't think anyways.. Id say 2yrs.. I understand some are less than that.. but I also wonder just what the heck is going on with them too... that's why the extended warranty is good.. it's a great deal.. I just noticed you are in montreal.. Im in ontario.. we support the USA tech.. end.. the Canadian is done in Toronto.. Im not sure what their prices are..

I know... my wife's IIIC went twice in Toronto for repair concerning the power switch (main button, the green one!). Now, it's running perfect. Actually, she was reading ebooks with her IIIc for more than 2 years, now, roughly 5 by month. She says now, it's uneasy to her to read a real book... :D

I understand that Treo 600 is same as Zire 71, plus cell software. So, I expect for myself to go to a kind of Zire 71 + cell phone, probably by the end of 2004. That's why my question... :)

I guess that new models by this time will be with OS6... with tv included!

:D :D

Actually, I did some fixations on my motorbike, a Goldwing from 1980, allowing me to use my Zire 71 as mp3 player, as the main music system on my bike. I got time watch in plus, in this way! The next step in this way should be to add CBradio, if the next Palm generation should be include it... :D :D :D

apalmtech

LOL well .. you can hope and pray for that cbradio.. LOL

Nothing is brewing officially over OS 6 as of yet.. so who knows what we'll see.

Chi,
The Treo 600 and the Zire 71 share only the Palm OS. They are two very different devices. Thier screens, processor, batteries etc are all different.
Perhaps I missed your point coming in late on this thread.
