My daughter recently gave me back my faithful 3a after using it at university. The alarm sounds (chimes, fanfare, etc) are missing, but key clicks work OK. Is it possible to accidently delete the alarm sounds or have I a ROM problem? Alternatively, could I have a simple hardware problem such as a speaker lead disconnected? The rest of the Psion works just fine.

Press "Menu", go to the Control menu and select Sound. Set "Alarm sounds" to On.

It can't be a speaker problem as the key clicks use the speaker too :)

Mike, thanks for the suggestion, but alarm sounds are set to On!

Not sure what else to suggest as the alarms are part of the ROM and so cannot be altered. The only other thing that comes to mind is a file she may have installed and which causes a conflict with alarms. Have you tried a "soft" reset? I know it's a bit of a pain with Series 3 machines as you have to set up the System screen again and reinstall applications.

When I got the machine back from my daughter the batteries were flat, so it had a cold start when I took it over. Can I create a wve file which can be used by alarms?

I'm totally baffled by this, since your machine has obviously been hard reset and, as Mike says, the alarm sounds are in ROM, so they MUST be there.

Have you got anything else on there which creates sounds, apart from the key clicks? And if so, is it working?

As for using your own wav file - I don't recall being able to do this on the S3 machines, but maybe someone will know different. It's certainly possible on an EPOC machine - I once transferred the infamous "crickets" alarm from the Revo to my MC218. Curiously though, it had nowhere near the volume that it has on the Revo, so it was a pointless exercise! Can anyone explain THAT one?

Thanks Mike & Julie for offering help. I have further news; when I try to record a sound, a file is created, but no sound comes forth on playback! I am wondering if there is more than one connection to the speaker - one for system keyclicks and one for wve files. Or maybe a second little transducer for the keyclicks only. Maybe someone can point me to a photo of the 3a internals.

The problem is not catastrophic as the machine is otherwise OK, but it would be nice to get it sorted. I have a Palm III and a Psion 5, but I have always considered the 3a suited me best.

LOL! :D Member status is nothing to do with your date of birth, as you've no doubt gathered. It relates to the number of postings you have made on the forum, therefore (kind of) indicating level of experience.
