E.g., "Hack" DrMud 10-14-2002, 01:10 PM Z, The term "hack" as applied to Palm devices has its origins in the same term as applied to computers systems and web site security. It is based on the concept of physically cutting into (hacking into) the operating system or security system. In the physical world think of the individual that seeks to get into a phone system by cutting into the wires and connecting directly to the line. In computers a hack is designed to take the most direct route into the operating system. The hack by its very intrusive nature tends to put the system in an abnormal posture. Hacks can make a system crash or lock up. On the other hand there are many well designed hacks that can accomplish things on a Palm that are not possible by other means. Hacks are like most things in life, they can be great they can be awful; you never know. DrMud zyzzyva 10-14-2002, 02:52 PM What I thought Just coming to terms with Palm terms Here, it seems more legal than illegal though Anyway, gotcha Telyx 10-14-2002, 07:50 PM It's quite legal. Palm seemed to encourage it from the very beginning by making its source code and SDK free. There are several Hack controllers available; the original was HackMaster, but there are also X-Master and EVPlugBase. I think there is also one from TealSoft. I use X-Master myself; it's more stable than HackMaster and it's freeware too. Most Hacks I've run across are very stable and do add functions like getting rid of the dotted lines in Memo Pad, adding different sounds to your Palm, adding/configuring different fonts, and even overclocking the processor (risky, but OK if not taken to extremes). But there are bound to be some bad ones out there, and sometimes it's just a conflict with the Palm OS version or with other programs or Hacks. My suggestion would be to try them one at a time, and if you have problems, you know which one to delete. zyzzyva 10-15-2002, 04:13 AM It is good Palm encourages hacks I am finding some intriguing FREE programs Thank you DrMud 10-15-2002, 08:32 AM Be advised that Palm has stated very clearly that Palm OS 5 is not hack friendly. If you are using hacks now and you move to a newer Palm OS 5 device in the future you will not be able to use your hacks. Developers have been saying that with OS 5 some operations that in OS 4 required hacking the OS can now be accomplished without potentially destabilizing the Palm. DrMud little-man 10-30-2002, 09:21 PM one thing you can use to keep hacks from conflicting is trapweaver. download it anywhere. it makes your palm more stabel mmencke 10-31-2002, 09:38 AM Actualy, acording to PDAbuzz.com yesterday tealmaster 2.00 claims to be able to run hackmaster hacks unser palm OS 5.0 DrMud 10-31-2002, 10:36 AM Thanks for the note about the article on PDABuzz. I use MegaWiki and was really saddened to think that when (and if) I migrate to an OS 5 unit I would not have that unique functionality. Doc PDA Street
