I have had my NetBook Pro for a week now and have yet to find *any* third party software other than the excellent SpreadCE which will work with it.

What should I be looking for? Software for handheld PCs? Or Pocket PCs? Windows CE 2? Or 3.0? Or Windows Mobile 2003?

The 'about' box tells me that the processor is ARM - but is it StrongARM? Can I install apps directly to the Psion? Or do I need to find a Windows machine and run the Active Sync program?

Does anybody have a list of software that will definitely work on the Netbook Pro?

Many thanks.

You should be looking for programs for Handheld PC that is compatible with the ARM processor. Basically, that will be H/PC Pro (Windows CE 2.1x) and HPC 2000 (Windows CE 3.0) software (Windows CE 2.0 software only comes in MIPS and SH3 varieties).

The NB Pro uses an Intel X-Scale compatible processor and it is ARM compatible. That's all you need to know. The StrongARM processor is another ARM compatible processor. Thus, H/PC software that was written for it will work for the NB Pro as well. (this is analogous to Pentium vs Athlon "brands" -- both will run the same software).

I would think that the majority of H/PC Pro and HPC 2000 software (for ARM) should work on the NB Pro. There may be problems with the Windows based installation routines -- but if you get the appropriate "CAB" installation files, you should be able to copy them directly onto the device and then install from the device.

If you look around, you will find that some PocketPC and Windows Mobile 2003 software can be "MADE" to run on the NB Pro as well. However, it is almost certain that the standard installation routines won't work -- you will have to hack the software to some degree. If you research on the internet, you will find more info.

TextMaker for H/PC is known to work (and is rated to work) with the NB Pro. This is certainly the best word processing proggy for Handheld PCs (giving you essentially Word95/97 type functionality).

I would look at Micorsofts emmbedded partner website for 3rd pary providers for ce.net. Many 3.0 or higher, pocket pc2003 will run on the device. It is dependant on the development language.
