I have just bought a new hp 1940 pocket pc 2003 PDA and I need to transfer my files from my old psion 3c 2 mb to the new unit mainly my data address book( over 1000 entries) and my agenda I thought I could sync my psion to outlook and then sync outlook back to the new PDA but when I tried this it says that I cannot sync a 3c only a series 5 any way round this. thanks.

I've moved this to the synchronisation forum since that really is the essence of your problem, and I think it will receive more attention here.

It's certainly possible to sync data and agenda on an S3 machine with Outlook - I did so with my old 3a for years. I'm not quite sure what your stumbling block is - can you post again with more information on exactly what happens when you try to perform the sync?

There are others on this forum who know far more about sync than I do - between us we should be able to help.

Jonathan,

What version of PsiWin are you using? There were earlier version of Psiwin (2.1 and 2.2) that didn't allow you to sync with a 3c without a registry change. PsiWin 2.3.3 allows you to sync a 3c directly and is available free in the "Most Popular" software section here. You need this version if you are using Windows XP or 2000 since earlier version won't work with these two operating systems.

Please have a read through the messages posted in the Syncronisation section of the messages posted in the last month or so. I've written lots of tips and hints about how to make syncing work and they apply to the 3c as well as the 5mx. The only difference is that the 3c uses a Data file for contacts rather than the newer Contacts program in the 5mx.

I might also suggest, if you're willing to spend $29.00, that you get PsiSync at http://www.gadec.com/psisync/default.asp . It is dead easy to sync your 3c with Outlook and does things that PsiWin won't like syncing your Jotter entries to Outlook notes. It is probably the best program ever written for the Psion and Outlook but only works on Series 3 machines. The author has no plans to upgrade the program for the Series 5,which is a pity, since I'd be willing to pay him a big bundle of cash for a 5mx version that worked as well as the Series 3 version.:)

I too have yearned for a version of PsiSync to run on the ER5 machines - brilliantly reliable program! I used it constantly when I had my 3a - it was known as AgendaSync originally, if I recall correctly.

A great pity it has never made it to EPOC.

Jonathan, if you do need to get a copy of PsiWin 2.3.3, do be prepared for a fairly large download - it's around 25MB.

Thanks everyone I have now managed to sync my 3c to my new hp 1940 but have two problems, first one is that when I used the agenda on my psion I did not use any time slots I just used it as a daily list of jobs, now I synced it to my hp 1940 I can not view any off my agenda enteries ,they are there because if I use search I get a list of enteries or on the day there are any enteries they come up on the today screen anyway of altering them to show in the normal calender view.the second problem is with searching my contacts list with the old psion 3c I could put any search in I.E. parts of phone numbers any info at all and would get a list of enteries containing that search item no matter how small, it appears that with the 1940 I can only search the name line and then it has to be full names I.E. could not put in ann and get a list of ann and anne, any way around this. Glad to hear the Psion side of your problem has been resolved. As for the HP1940, sorry I don't have any knowledge of that machine, but it sounds as though its search capabilities are a bit limited.

For assistance on this, you'll probably do better to post your query on the Pocket PC forums.

Jon,

If you had everything in your Psion Agenda as untimed entries, that means that Outlook will also convert them to untimed entries that will show up with a start and end time of midnight of the day of the entry. They are all in your IPAQ but they are piled up all the way at the top in the midnight slot. This is, as you can now tell, not a good way to use an Agenda file. The only workaround would be to change your IPAQ so it shows the start of your day at midnight rather than the default of 8:00 am. You'll at least not have to scroll upward all the time to see your entries. There's no easy way to assign all these entries to time slots except by exporting from Outlook to Excel, assigning each event to a time, and then importing the results back into Outlook. Depending on how many entries you've got, this could be a very time consuming task.

As to the phone book search, you really need to get a third party program that replaces the dreadful standard Pocket PC applications. The best, in my opinion, is Pocket Informant. This replaces all four of the built-in PIM's but still syncs with Outlook. You can get more information at http://www.pocketinformant.com/ .

thanks jim, the enteries are not on the midnight time slot I now realise that they have been put into the 1940 as all day events I can see them in outlook but they do not appear in the 1940 calender view only way to see them is to use find then I get a list.any ideas I only need to see the exitsting enteries as all the new entries I am putting in I am using the correct time slots.
