I have a Psion 5mx which has failed (Completely dead and does not respond to soft or hard resets) and may not be worth repairing. A backup to a PC was taken just before this happened but synchronisation with Outlook has not been done.

Does anyone know of a way to access the Psion backup files on the PC which can recover diary and contacts information?

As you have an up-to-date backup, I would suggest you remove both main and backup batteries and leave the 5mx without power for several hours (or overnight). Then see if it comes back to life when the power is restored.

This has been known to work with many apparently dead Psions :)

Chris, there is a Symbian SDK program available as a free but large download (used to be available on cd) that gives an excellent 5MX emulator on the pc. I have just tried copying my agenda file from last backup to the emulator folder and it works fine. I cannot verify that contacts will work but no reason why not. Regards, Bob

Yep, the emulator works fine for all data, including contacts. :) Get back to us if you need to go down that road and require any guidance.

I'm hoping Mike's solution has worked for you, though!

there's a guide to using the EPOC emulator in my FAQ - URL below.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I tried Mike's suggestion and although the screen remained dead it did become possible to get a link to the PC established so I was able to restore the backup and then synchronise with Outlook to recover the data.

The screen remains dead and it has been suggested that the most likely cause is a broken flexible link to it. Sounds like a small job to fix that and not worth the £90 Psion are suggeting for repairing it. Can these be got anywhere - does anyone know?

You can certainly get a screen cable from POS:

£15 to buy it for DIY, or £75 fitted as part of their standard service. Going on independent advice, I understand this is a complex operation and not to be undertaken lightly as a DIY.

I know I wouldn't attempt it, but it's your call! Perhaps others would care to comment on this?
