Is it possible to use a PocketPC device with a wireless card to access resources on a network?
iPaq with CE 3.0 and DLink 802.11b card.
I would like to be able to open/download files from a file server and even possible implement device syncing from the deivice without being connected to a cradle, but rather use the 802.11b.
Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.

Well - ActiveSyncing over wireless is easier than accessing resources. I use Casio E-125 and Linksys wireless card to ActiveSync - blazing fast (compared to USB or serial) - just download PocketHosts from http://www.zimac.de
This will add your desktop's IP address into HOSTS in the registry (or you can do it manually), and then start ActiveSync on your iPAQ, and select Network in the interface (where you have options for Infrared, Serial, etc). Your desktop doesn't even have to be directly connected to a wireless AP - as long as it's on a network that has a wireless AP you connect to with iPAQ.
As for file download - well, I have a web server on my dsktop machine - so I just add simple HTML pages with links to files (or directories) I have files in, and then access and download files via web browser from your PocketPC.

Also, there is a utility to access network resources. Check at

I've found that I can access a network share from my PPC by going to file explorer and simply entering the server and share name. Simple as that. I have been trying to access my music shares from Media Player so that I can play them across my wireless network.
BTW I just got the Linksys WFC11 and it works great... made the assumption that it was plug-n-play like a modem but had to load the linksys drivers disk then everything worked fine.

I have found way to access MP3 files over the network by going in and manually editing a playlist file made on the pocketpc. I take the playlist on my desktop and enter the network path and file name; \\network pooter\share dir\dir\file.name
The playlist files are just simple text based files, not hard to figure out. Hopefully plan to write a program to create the playlist files quicker. After you edit the file, just place it back on the Pocket PC and press play.

Found a program called bizz dev net use which allows for network browsing and you can 'map' a network drive and then just click on the mp3 file to play it. I also tried some of the mpg files that I have downloaded. The video is quite jumpy. I have been able to use some of the media player tools to make smaller video files which play rather smooth on the pocketpc.
Good luck tho...
Still wating on a fix to Yahoo Messenger.

Hi. I just replaced my NetGear MR314/MA401 setup on my home network with a Linksys BEFW11S4/WPC11. I had the NetGear setup so that I could browse my network files either thru File Explorer or NetUse. However, now that I'm using the WPC11, I can browse the Internet, I can ping my network, but when I try to browse (even using the \\server\sharename procedure), I'm asked to log onto my network and when I do, I get access denied.
Anybody have a clue as to why this is happening?
