I have a Clie NR70 and use a Mac at home and Windows NT at work. Knowing that NT does not support USB, I bought a Clie cable with a serial connector. No problem, except (and this may be a dumb question):
Since there is no Sync button on the cable, how do I initiate a sync? I see no "sync now" commands anywhere in the manager.
What am I missing?

One of the applications that is on your clie is called Hotsync. This is the program that (normaly) automaticaly starts up when you press the hotsync button.
If you don't have a button, or just don't want to use the button you can start the Hotsync program on your clie.
You will see the hotsync symbol in the middle as a button with some text below that is part of a drop down list. This text should be Cradle/Cable, I think. Then proess the button in the middle and you should start syncing.
There is another setting called "direct serial" but I think this is for something other than what you have. Try the other setting and if it does not work then try the direct serial.

I'm not sure that this is correct. I suspect the problem is Sony does not support serial synching serail cable not withstanding. If you install the Sony desktop and hit hotsynch it will not know what to do. The Sony desktop willkeep looking for a USB port. I've seen a similar problem though solved with old Jazz drives. Iomega made both a hardware and software adatper to let parrael port computers access a scsi Jazz drive. But the key again is you need software support.
I've been told you need to install Palm desktop version and lose some sony features to make serial synching work. Does anyone know if this is true or not. Also kind of clunky to constantly have to do this by software.

Steve is on the right track. Initiate the HotSync from the HotSync Icon on the SONY home screen. Setting: Cradle/Cable.

I think the question about SONY's desktop and serial are valid. I am not a SONY owner so I can't pop up the desktop and take a peek.
When you setup the hotsync conduit did it offer Serial?

I'm using win 2k pro so don't need and don't use the serial sync stuff.
But when I open the hotsync icon in my task tray it does have a local serial setting as well as my clie (NR70) has a serial setting in the hotsync screen.
So if sony does not support serial for the clies they never removed the option from their software.
Try it it might work even if they say it does not. Alot of what is stated as works by a company is more an issue of what they have tested and what they are willing to support.

Can't tell you as doing this for colleague and we havent gotten this far. All I know is what I've researched.

Makes me a lot more optimistic because unlike some Clies, sony doesnt even make a serial cradle for the nr series. How long ago did you get yours and what version desktop??
The only other stickler could be compatibilityt of NT 4.x because that's where Im hearing about the serial problems.

jkannry,
I've only had my clie four about 3 months now, and the version of the desktop is 4.0.1, same for the hotsync manager.
