Somebody has already offered to upgrade Zire to 8mb RAM for Euro 45/-

http://www.vivomobile.de/de/index.html

Although it voids the warranty, it is an alternative for those who likes the cute Zire but wants more RAM.

I used this service in January 2000 to upgrade my Palm V from 2 MB to 8 MB. The service was excellent, I was kept informed of the upgrade progress via email, and I had my Palm back in less than 1 week. I recently read on the web site that they upgrade Zires from 2 MB to 8 MB for $59. Not sure how that compares in price with the other service, but at least this offers an alternative.

Very cool. How did you do it?

The RAM appears to be soldered, not socketed, to the motherboard. See the picture of the motherboard and components in this link:

http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=4324

Is there an easy way to replace the RAM without having to unsolder the many pins of the memory chip?

Sorry but donīt exists another way... the chip are soldered... and you have to have SMD soldering knowledge for made it...

What you're saying then is that the upgrade was a "piece of cake" for you, but that the average Palm Zire user who does not have access to Suface Mount Device soldering equipment or experience in using an SMD station is out of luck?

I don't think that many Zire users will buy into your claim that the do-it-yourself RAM upgrade is a "piece of cake."

Iīm not using SMD station... but itīs true, you have to know how to replace the chip... I correct my previous afirmation, "Is a piece of cake compared with the upgrade to 16Mb for CLIE N7x0C"

Thank you for clarifying your "piece of cake" statement. I know it would not be easy for me to swap the RAM module, which is why I pay others to provide the service for me. I admire that you are able to do-it-yourself.

I've read all of the replys. But how do you make it 8MB? Do you have to like open up the palm and put it inside? Oh and if you give me a site give me one that is in english.

You forgot the magic word PLEASE!!! Your reply sound like a sentence of dead... :D
You have to take out the 2Mb chip, solder one of 8Mb in this place and move some resistors...
I haven't any English site about that but I think the pictures are enough clear... May be AltaVista translation helps...

No conozco a nadie en Mexico...
El upgrade es simple pero se necesita tener conocimiento de soldadura sobre SMT (Componentes de montaje superficial)...
Hay que cambiar el chip de 2Mb por uno 8Mb y mover 3 resistencias...

It might of been better to simply buy an m105. You get 8MB of memory, a backlit screen, the option to change faceplates, Flash memory and a cradle. The only thing better that the Zire has is a rechargable battery.

The M105 has flash memory but can't be used from the PalmOS like the Zire...
but I agree the M105 is a better machine...
