I just bought a Zire 71 and had no problem the first time I tried to perform a hotsync, but now for some reason, I keep getting a error message that reads, "The connection between your hanheld computer and desktop could not be established. Please check setup and try again." Nothing has changed on my computer. I have placed SEVERAL calls to the good people in India, (Palm technical support), who had me uninstall and reinstall my software about 5 times, this hasn't worked. I was told I need to update my USB drivers??? Or maybe update my service pack?? Don't have a clue how to do that. I have Windows XP. If Ya'll can't help me, I'm going to take this thing back and get my money back, from reading thses posts, it seems like there is quite a variety of problems with these things. Help please??!!!:)

The Zire craddle is a kind of "funky" device... it is very easy to mis-place the Zire.
Try to replace the Zire in cradle; don't be afraid to "shake it" in place, in a way to get good contact between Zire and cradle. There are alot of electric contacts between them and all need to be in full contact to work properly.
Good luck!
in the same subject - i had the same problem, and at first, chichille8's idea worked. but now the **$%** device won't sync unless i hold it tight during the sync !
there needs to be a way to solve this lousy cradle problems !
it has to stop !
the zire it self is so cute, palmone had to spoil the fun with this piece of .... cradle !
siriously - what can we do about it? did someone ask palmone in regardingto this matter ?

I had the same problem way back when the Palm Pilot Professional was new. The contacts on the cradle would get bent back just enough to not make a good connection unless you pushed a little harder on it.
I used a fine pick (with the cradle unplugged) and pulled each pin out just the slightest little bit and it would fix it.
NOW - For the Zire, I don't think that this would fix it, as the connector is much finer with smaller pins.

I had a few USB prob. before. I find that I had a USB 2.0 drive and to use it, I had to have the correct driver, which XP doesn't support until you update it with Service Pack 1.
I'm not sure if it would help the problem, but just a suggestion. I doubt it is...cause it sounds more like a cradle prob.
By the way, Service packs can be updated using the windows update program in your "Tools" in your Internet Explorer. It'll take you to a website and help you d/l it.

I used a cradle once...6 years ago. Ever since I have used a
Palm combo synch/charger cable. Works great. Also use the Boxwave retractable cable when I travel.
