I have a 710c, and I have misplaced the distribution CD, with my software. Is there a place I can ftp or download the CD image?

Please help!

I asked this very same question of Sony myself awhile back when I couldn't find my original installation CD -- the answer from Sony was no, you need to go through them to get another CD. Sorry.

If the CD contents are unavailable, are there instructions anywhere on doing the upgrade to 4.x one's self?

Not that I'm aware of, though I could be wrong on that. My general impression of Sony's online and phone support is not so hot, unfortunately. I wish they would offer more in the way of downloadables via their website, but for some innane reason, they don't. :(
