Has anyone successfully linked a 5mx to a Nokia 3360 via IR to send email on AT&T in the states? What settings did you use?

I've read what's here on linking the Psion 5mx to the IR port of the Nokia 3360 on AT&T and have come up with no success. The Psion message for email is "0 of 1 messages sent. Trouble connecting to phone modem. Check modem settings." or something of the like.
I have the MCU installed and have tweaked most all of the settings in all the permutations and combinations I can imagine.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
~Bob Mansfield

Quick thought - here in the UK we have to request our ISP to enable the mobile phone account for data calls. It sounds like your Psion is not "finding" your phone.

I don't know if this applies in the US or whether you will have already done it, but I thought it worth a mention.

Julie,
Thanks! I've called AT&T and they don't know what I'm talking about. Folks on Nokia's forum say that AT&T in the states will not handle data calls.
I'm not sure my ISP would know how to get into my phone to make those changes. We'll give it a try.
Thanks for your consideration.

Terribly sorry!! An error in my post to you has caused confusion - I meant that you may have to ask your phone service provider to enable your account for data calls. I typed "ISP" by mistake - I must remember not to post whilst cooking dinner at the same time!

If you're saying that AT&T don't handle data calls, then it looks like you need a different phone service provider.

We could use some input here from some of the other stateside guys. Bobbyr? Calbrit? Anyone?

Sorry again

What part is AT&T playing

- is it your phone network provider?
- is it your ISP to connect to the internet?
- is it an ISP you don't connect with but retrieve POP3 email from?

Saying that they don't handle data calls suggests that they are your phone network and not your ISP. If they are both, I cannot believe they don't support data calls on the phone.

I was assuming that AT&T was the phone network provider, and that the ISP was a different company.

I'm confused too, and my typo didn't help matters either.

Perhaps you can clarify, please, Bob - then we'll start again!

Julie & Mike,
Thanks for your patience ...
Nokia makes my phone.
AT&T provides wireless (cellular) TDMA phone service.
Cutting Edge Technology (CET) is my ISP.
Psion 5mx is my EPOC platform.
AT&T provides both digital and analog service and, in the Spokane, Washington area, the service is digital.
From my Nokia 3360 I have successfully sent both text messages and email ... but not utilizing the Psion.
The Psion successfully sends business cards to, and receives "contact data" from the 3360.
When trying to link the Psion and 3360, the 3360 quits blinking the IR symbol and goes to a steady IR symbol, meaning it IS communicating with the Psion. At some point, however, this times out and I get an error message, indicating the 3360 is not entirely happy with the modem settings on the Psion.
I have yet to see a consistent suggestion for an initialization (rest) string for the 3360. They vary from "ATZ" to "AT&F&K3" to "AT&F&K5." None yet work for me.
And that"s where I am.

I have yet to see a consistent suggestion for an initialization (rest) string for the 3360. They vary from "ATZ" to "AT&F&K3" to "AT&F&K5." None yet work for me. The traditional Nokia initialisation string has been AT&F&K4 which sets the modem (phone) to use Software flow control. The Psion should therefore also be set to use Software (Xon/Xoff) flow control.

However, I am currently using a Nokia 6310 with AT&F&K3 which sets Hardware flow control and my Psion is set to Hardware (RTS/CTS) flow control. (Nokia's .pdf file for the 6310 suggests "&K3")

Give these two options a try. Also create the file path C:\Logs\Etel\ and have a look at the GSMTSY.txt log file in the Etel folder after your next connection attempt. It might give a clue.
