Dear all,

I have battery problems (Revo +) and I have read here some real useful articles how to try solve this problem. Now I have quite funny situation. I have read several times "soft and hard reset" but I don't know how to do these resets.

So four simple questions:

1. How to perform the soft reset?
2. How to perform the hard reset?
3. How can I be sure the reset was succesful?
4. What is the difference between them?

Thanks

Yskis

Assuming you don't have the manual which tells you in the "Troubleshooting" section at the back ;)

<< How to perform the soft reset? >>

Open your Revo, then gently press something like an unfolded paperclip into the reset hole marked "1". Do not insert anything into the hole marked "2" at the same time.

After a soft reset, your Revo will 'beep' twice when you switch it on.

<< How to perform the hard reset? >>

Open your Revo, then gently press something like an unfolded paperclip into both reset holes marked "1" and "2" at the same time. Press the Esc (On) key twice to switch the Revo on. After a hard reset, it should 'beep' once. If it beeps twice, you have only performed a soft reset and should try the hard reset again.

What the manual doesn't say, and what users have found, is that to hard reset you should keep both reset buttons pressed for about 10 to 15 seconds as this will allow time for the memory to lose the data.

<< How can I be sure the reset was succesful? >>

Per the above - two beeps after a "soft" reset and one beep after a "hard" reset.

<< What is the difference between them? >>

A soft reset "reboots" the Revo without the loss of internal data (except unsaved open files).

A hard reset restores the Revo to its original out-of-the-box state with the loss of all internal data.

To "soft" reset without having to poke with paperclips, download the "Reboot.zip" file from the Series 5 page of my website and install the little .opo file in your Revo (it's only 535 bytes).

1. How to perform the soft reset?

There are two methods: Software and Hardware.

First the Hardware:

Open your revo and look to the left of the bar code. There are two holes about the diameter of the wire used to make paper clips. One is labled 1 and the other 2.

Insert the end of a paper clip into hole 1 and depress the switch. The unit will soft reset

Secondly Software:

This is the prefered method. There are a number of programs available to soft reset a revo, I use Restart from Paragon Software.

2. How to perform the hard reset?

At the same time insert the end of a papr clip into both hole 1 and hole 2. Depress the switches and hold for 10 seconds.

3. How can I be sure the reset was succesful?

The soft reset causes the loss of control panal customisations such as Key clicks, the display the About Revo screen (Ctr+H) and swiftly executed downward pattern of three or four notes.

The hard reset will be evident by the return of the revo to its factory settings. Any programs or data will be lost.

4. What is the difference between them?

The soft reset will close all programs and restart the system. Loaded programs and data are not affected.
the hard reset will return the revo to its factory settings. Any programs or data will be lost.
