Those that have had a previous iQue need to take precautions when they register the free update of the iQue, i.e. if they got a new set of City Select with the second iQue.

The first time you register your gps and map at Garmin, your Registration code on the yellow slip is taken as your customer code. To make things worse, Garmin can also refer to this code as the coupon code. It consists of 7-8 figures and letters here called XXXXXXX.

With the second iQue you got a new yellow slip and a new Registration/coupon code, here called YYYYYYY.

So you have received a free upgrade for CS 6 in a brown envelope. There is no paper with a coupon code included as it would have been if you had bought the software. You now proceed to the www.garmin.com/unlock page.

Choose 1. Unlock your map source CD. Click on Unlock and you come to the page with the trap.

If you purchased an ...iQue... and would like to receive an unlock code for an updated CD, please enter your registration code as a Returning customer. Fine.

But under the heading Returning customer it says: If you are returning to the Garmin Mapsource Unlock section, and you already have a customer code, please enter it here........

Don't do that! That is, don't enter your customer code, because that is the XXXXXXX registration code of your first iQue which had a different serial number from the iQue that you have now. So enter the YYYYYYY 7-8 alfadigital code of the present CS5, unlocked with your present iQue.

If you enter your customer code XXXXXXX, you will register CS6 for the RMA'd iQue and the new iQue can't unlock the detailed maps and you'll be sorry.

So, knowing the caveat, you enter the right registation code and click to step 2

On the next page you'll get a confirmation:

The coupon code you entered: YYYYYYY (i.e new CS5 reg code)

The mapsource product which this coupon code is associated with: Well this ':' doesn't lead to a relevant next sentence

And now:

Your unlock customer code is XXXXXXX. You will be asked to ue this code on all future visits. - Well don't to that. Support says you can just as well enter the YYYYYYY code. Doing that will avoid problems.

Next is a box listing your serial number, maps source product and what you have done and the coupon code YYYYYY.

(Since I made the mistake of entering XXXXXXX, I can confirm that this shows your CS6 unlocked to your RMA'd iQue.)

Now you have an option in blue:

Unlock update CD (it's black and not clickable if you already did)

You come to the third page containing step 7 of 7: receive unlock code.

They welcome you by name and once again try to fool you:
Whenever revisiting the MapSource Unlock pages, please reference your customer code: XXXXXXX

This is your unlock code:

Follows 5x5 alfanumerical string enhanced with yellow.

You can do as they say or go to Mapsource tools and click on unlock regions. Click add, you get a box saying add unlock region. Copy paste the 25 numbers</letters alphanumerical string into the designed field. Also add a reference for which product and which GPS.

Done.

BTW, don't delete CS5. Support says CS6 uses some of the data. And yes, detailed map blocks are larger than before plus that they contain more data for routing than before. Thus the same region will take up some more space.

I've done my best but please correct where necessary and I'll enter that here.

I hope this post can be useful on first page until people have installed their CS 6 free upgrades.

If I have 2 iQues - one purchased in UK and one in US, then I unlocked both versions of CS5 for both devices (so that I can have Eurpoe & USA on either iQue) I presume that I will nly be able to unlock CS6 for 1 of my 2 iQues, is that correct?

As I understand it, you can unlock any of the Mapsource products for two devices.

No, with the free upgrade you should still be entitled to unlock two different devices. I asked support in UK specifically about this today saying that I might want CS6 for a Garmin 60 GPS.

BTW The belgian distributor www.formar.be has a pop up window on their site today regading City Navigator -City Select version 6.

Text - in french (and dutch)

" City Navigator - City Select
Version 6

That is: Send email to info@formar.be to obtain the double CD
including the procedure to obtain the new unlock code , gicing your address and the version you need - City navigator or City Select.

The crucial words in dutch:

met uitleg over hoe u een nieuwe code kan verkrijgen =
"with an explanation of how you can obtain a new code"

So it seems they found it necessary to add an explanation. That is very good and could explain the delay. I'll contact them tomorrow and ask for the text so that it can be displayed here.

Maybe someone reads this forum? I told Garmin support I was going to post on the topic so I wanted the details to be perfectly clear.

Edit: www.garmin.de adds - meticulously as it should be -

This means: If you have an 8 letter code, go directly to step 2. If you have an 7 letter code - which most europeans who bought City Select bundled with the iQue should have - you should first register your device under Product registration >Deluxe PAckage (i.e. bundled) on www.garmin.com

Further it says that CS 6 is free of charge for devices registered after Sep 1 2003 (incl GPS V).

www.garmin.it doesn't anything on the update procedure but has some details on what has been improved for different countries which is not mentioned on garmin.com's site. See the italian site and download a zip file with a pdf document. Click on the green letters Scarica. You don't need to unzip, you can just click on the pdf and read it from the folder it was downloaded to.

There aren't any instructions on the french garmin resellers site www.eme.fr other than that they want orders for the free upgrade per letter including a check for 9.11 euros for handling.

This page has a form to fill in for the request - as you can see one can obtain a paid upgradde version of City Select Europe for 158,10 euros. But then you probably need to have CS5 already.

http://www.eme.fr/pdf/garmin/update.pdf

Did Garmin sanction the handling charge??

Spain doesn't seem to have a centralized representation and garmin in the UK doesn't have its own site AFAIK

Thanks, Jonas.

Following your instruction above, I got my code for CS 6 without any kind of problem. Worked immediately.

Even for you my instructions worked - that's the ultimate proof:)

Well, so now on to find out what they missed in CS6. I'm suspicious of complex entries/exits to motorways.

Navtech is funny. Today I got a reply stating that a road that I have said is open to traffic is closed because that's what their database says. It's a freak road going straight onto the Brussels ring road that the widow queen of Leopold III used until she died a couple of years ago. I and a few thousand others use it as well.
Still I have enclosed tracks as I drive onto the ring road over the 50 meter section they say is abolished. It is a perfectly normal road, asphalt and all.

So I'll have to send some photos

Provided that you have the same copy of CS5 unlocked to your European & USA iQues you will be able to unlock CS6 to both. But be careful as explained by Jonasolof it can be very confusing. :) I can personally vouch for this as it had me going nuts for a while as to which voucher / customer code / reg code it wanted next when i unlocked for both of my units

It's such a long time ago since i unlocked mine that i can not exactley remember all the details, and i would not want to give incorrect or incomplete instructions that could cost you the loss of the ability to have the data unlocked to both units. You have to be very careful to input the correct info on Garmins site, and because of this i would very strongley advise that you phone Garmin who are always very helpful :)

Did I miss something? Are the updated CS 6 maps sent automatically to all registered users? I haven't received any updated maps to this point. Can you clarify?

You have to write to them to ask for them, the addresses/email addresses , are on Garmin's website. Pretty much everyone who has CS5 iwth their ique is entitled to free upgrade cd's for CS6.

Just send them an email with your address requesting a CS6 update CD and they'll post it, include the serial #' from your que would be good but all that checking etc is done when you try to unlock it online as per previous posts.

hope this helps

I emailed Garmin and received the following reply:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'd be happy to help you with that. The most up to date mapping for North America that we have available is the version that came with your iQue 3600, North American City Select V5. When updates are released, that information will be available on this webpage:

http://www.garmin.com/unlock/

Best Regards,

GARMIN International"

Basically stating the V5 was the most recent version available, it is also what is listed on the web link that he provided. Any other suggestions?

The upgrade discussed in this thread is for Europe not North America.
