Hi,

New to the street. Can anyone help with advice on how to hotsync my Handera 330 to a laptop with no serial ports? I have tried many avenues re infrared hotsyncing and failed. I have a usb-serial converter but since upgrading to windows XP the hardware is nolonger recognized (despite up to date drivers the OS recognizes the device but cannot "locate" it).

Are there 3rd party hotsync cables or cradles for the Handera with usb plugs?

Many thanks,

Straylight

HE330 IR works great with Win XP for me. Win 2k has driver issues. Don't know why it does not work for you.

I use WIN XP with Service Pack 1, Palm Desktop 4.1, a USB IR dongle (drivers on std XP distribution). Be certain hotsync in toolbar on PC is set for IR only (turn off serial, network, etc.). And of course set hotsync app on HE330 to use "IR to PC". Can your HE330 send IR to other devices (mobile phone, another PDA)? If not then your IR on HE330 might be broken.

As far as the USB serial dongle goes see if there's an updated driver (OOPS you did this). Then check for COM conflicts, does XP think there are COM ports at COMx where COMx is the virtual COM port setup for the IR interface.

Good luck.

Thanks genoahous,

I finally got the usb serial adapter to work with new drivers from the manufacturer. I never managed to hotsync via IR. I'm using Palm v 3.5 - maybe this version will not do it?

straylight Good to hear you got it to work. Not being able to Hotsync is frustrating. And when it happens it's important to backup to flash memory regulary.

When I was running OS3.5.3 A29 I had no problems with IR hotsync. So not OS issue. FYI - Still works with OS4.1 410 Beta.

The only halfway reliable way to use the Palm USB connector and software is to use it with a Mac.

After struggling with my USB kit since 2000, trying to make it work with Palm IIIe, IIIx, TRG Pro, and finally the Handera 330 (and with numerous PCs), I bought a Palm Cube (for aesthetic reasons, and to use as an email recipient, sidestepping much of the virus problem)

It also hasn't a serial port, but the cursed Palm USB works perfectly.

My latest PC is post-legacy, and hasn't a serial port. I solved the Palm (Handera) problem by finding a Portsmith Palm III configuration ethernet cradle for about $10 plus shipping through eBay, and found the appropriate software over the Web. It is plugged into my switch, and the software on the serial-less PC, and all works flawlessly for synchs!

So sidestepping USB might be your cheapest, least frustrating way to go. Oh, I thought of the network solution years ago, but when the Palm III form factor was current the cradles cost $195. No thanks. But now you can find them as obsolescent devices for $10 or so.
