Yes the dreaded Triple Beep Reset that my machine and maybe yours is suffering from, since ugrading to 7book and/or maybe after upgrading your netbook OS.

The reason I am posting this is that my machine has started suffering from more regular resets and I thought it would be interesting to find out if the netbook suffers aswell or if it is just a 7book (7series with netbook rom in) trait. If we can gather enough info, we may be able to come up with a solution.

My Machine: 7 series (756) upgraded to netbook running r158os
1 x Simple Technologies 128mb CF card and Psion CombineIT 56k 10/100 LAN card.

Now Diem has already confirmed that the Psion Combine IT cards can cause triple beep resets randomly if they are not upgraded to the latest firmware. I am not sure if this also applies to the netbook? I upgraded my card and my machine almost lasted a week without a reset. Then I noticed that launching apps such as FIWorld4 v4.41 was also causing occasional resets. I have performed a check disk functions and resinstalled all affected software but neither has resolved the problems.

Now either my modem/lan card is still causing these problems (On the next reset, I will be reinserting my old 56k Dacom card to check that if it is definitely this causing the problems) or it may be some of my applications. It does seem a bit of a coincidence that using apps such as FIWorld and RMR apps that take advantage of the Neuon's various OPX files occasionaly cause this problem aswell.

Can anyone else relate to any of this? Are you suffering from Triple Beep Resets? If so can you post as much info as poss so we can hopefully get to the bottom of it.

Kind Regards

Si

I own a new netbook(the new batch with update pcmcia interface). The machine came with the new OS and with it a problem that if I insert something in my PCMCIA slot it sometimes resets. I have a goldcard and thougth that this could be the problem but I also noticed it happens sometimes when a flash card(with a pcmcia adapter) is inserted. I also tried the previous OS version and this does not seem to have this problem.

Not had any TBRs on my netBook with the new OS. Machine is just over two years old, btw.

A problem I do get is "disk corrupt" messages when switching items in the PC card slot - this happens quite frequently, and needs a soft reset to fix it. By "items" I'm referring to modem card, CF adapter and SM adapter. I haven't tried the LAN card yet.

I also had the problem, after switching the netbook in standby and on again the flash disk is readable again.

Tried to install new OS after a reset, got my first TBR ever, and a white screen.

White screen is permanent, even when installing S7 personality.

Returning to repair.

Is there by the way any warranty on payed repairs ?

pro2type,

Have you tried leaving all the batteries out for a half hour or so?

I have not yet upgraded the card's firmware since I do not have a PC Card slot (I only have a desktop PC) so I cannot confirm the situation with the latest software loaded onto the Gold Card.

I can confirm that I had no problems with a 56k+Fax Gold Card (GSM & ISDN Ready) not have I had any issues with my Dane (*gulp*) 64 meg CF card.

Hi Simon.

Unfortunately, even if you could perform a firmware upgrade (I had to borrow someones laptop in work), I don't think it would resolve your triple beep resets. My card had the latest firmware but I upgraded it all the same and it only worked for a couple of days before the dreaded triple beep came back.

The only way to fix this problem (hopefully, as not had my card back yet), is to send it to Psion for a hardware upgrade. You will need to register the card on their website under the MyPsion area. Then raise an RMA and they will give you a code and address to send it back. Mine is due to be repaired by tomorrow. I will check the status later as you can track repairs online.

This will only cost you the postage to Psion (£3.65 or similar - Special Delivery) as the work is covered under their lifetime warranty.

I will let you know how I get on.

I also updated the firmware of my goldcard but with no luck. The 3 beep reset is still in there, after talking to psion they claim that the Goldcard combine IT should work without any problems.
Psion promissed to look into the matter and get back to me this week so let's wait and see..

According to Yan (Diem) earlier CombineIT cards did have a compatibility problem with the netbook. It seems the problem is caused by a racing hazard (on the PC Card) during the initialisation phase (his words not mine).

If Psion do not come back with anything for you, ask them to speak to the netbook development team as they should have full details of the required fix.

Better still, do what I did. Raise the RMA (Returns Maintenance Authority) online and just post it off. My card is currently scheduled for repair by 29/10/02 and I asked them to phone me if they find nothing wrong or intend returning the card without a fix. I will keep you all posted on how I get on.

Hi Si,

Thanks for the information about returning the card for a hardware upgrade. I was wondering if it was a problem with my old (I presume ... it's second hand) netBook and whether it would be solved with a new one. I'll raise a RMA once you can let us all know how your card was handled. BTW, which number on the Gold Card is the serial number? On the back of the card it looks as if the top one might be a product number and the lower one the actual serial number (5 digits, a space and then four digits).

My Serial number was a 9 digit number. The 5 & 4 split sounds about right on the card although, on the box it is not split. My repair currently has a due date of 29/10/02 although the Psion website confirms there is a delay on all card repairs:

Due to temporary problems in procuring parts our current turnaround for repairs is a minimum of 10 working days.

I will let you know how things go.

Si,

Thanks for the info. My 56k+Fax Gold Card also has a nine digit number (5+4 again) so I guess that this must be it.

I just looked at the repair site and saw the notice but I suppose that if the work needs doing then I'll just have to be patient.
