All of a sudden a few generic icons (the boring DOS-like icons) appear in the start menu (the 9 applications listed when you tap Start) of my 4150. It seems that this happens to installed programs, not ones in ROM. The programs work fine when I tap on the respective icon, but the original icon is gone. Then for no reason at all they will appear again for a while, only to disappear once more... Soft resetting doesn't have any effect. Any ideas as to why this annoying thing occurs?

Are these programs installed on the storage card? Because the storage card (especially sd card) is slower than main memory, there is sometime a timing issue when the OS is reading the icon files from the card. It just updates the screen before it finishes reading the icons.

Yupp, this might be the case. The programs are installed on a Viking SD card. Any workaround for this?

Yes.
Load them on Main Memory and not the SD card.

I have this problem. Except they were the programs included on my ppc. like iexplorer, wmp, word, excel...
I did a reset and all but the wmp one works now.
