If I press the power button for a while (when battery powered), the screen backlight setting slider shows up. If I keep the button pressed, the backlight turns off.

I kind of remember that it worked differently, i.e. without showing the slider first. Is my memory wrong or is this due to having Bright-IQ or is it due to release 3?
Anyone with release 2 want to do a quick test?

Must be release 3.

I have Bright-IQ installed and mine works as it always did - backlight goes on or off while holding in button without displaying slide-bar.

yeah, the press-hold turned on/off backlight here too. I also remember that from other palm pdas.

Have you tried press-hold on other buttons? Maybe theres a clock popup now. (m100 series had it mapped to press-hold the down button) volume or other things might be mapped to something else if brightness is.

mapping buttons might be a 'fix' for automotive users like me who notice that all the toolbar buttons are too small to hit with a fingernail accurately. tho the Q-related function buttons on the left side can be mapped in to the cycling of the Q button.

I bet its something Garmin corrected after getting a few iQues RMAed that simply had the backlighting turned off.

I have uninstalled BrightIQ and the power button works as usual on Palms. Pressing it for a while brings it on off in a toggling fashion each timne you do it.

I got it confirmed. From release 3, it's possible to change the backlight without bringing out the stylus at all.

Press power to turn on/off.

Press and hold power to bring up the backlight slider, then adjust with jog wheel or up/down and confirm with pressing jog wheel or ESC.

Press and hold longer to turn on/off backlight completely.

Now I would prefer that changing the backlight is confirmed by pressing the jog wheel, but if I press ESC, I would like it to go back to what it was before I started changing. Like a "No, this got wrong, take me out of it without changing anything" function.

There is also the possibility to turn backlight on and off with a swipe of the stylus on the screen from the graffiti area upwards. The setting is done in preferences buttons. But it seems it can only be done when the virtual graffiti area is shown...so unfortunately it can't be used while seeing maps.

Using OS4 hacks it was possible to have other strokes as commands. I am not aware of any such hacks for OS5
