You have to add wireless capabilities using some type of expansion sleeve and adapter, such as a PC card expansion sleeve and the AirCard 300 for wireless modem communications, the PC card and wireless LAN card such as the Compaq HNW-100 or WL110 and some type of access point such as the Compaq WL410 or Connection Point CP-2W or CP-2E. The 5000 series will be the first with built-in wireless communications.

I have a 3765 and recently purchased a PC Card Expansion Pack Plus CPQ part #249708-B21 http://www.compaq.com/products/quickspecs/11380_div/11380_div.HTML. I already have a wireless network at home with 3 wireless pcmcia cards (Cisco Aironet 340) which I use for my laptops etc., This card works nicely with the above expansion card and the driver is a no brainer install. just 1 file to download, double click and Voila, it's installed.

If you do not have an existing wireless network, it is going to be a somewhat costly affair. The SMC barricade (wireless base station/ broadband router/firewall which I purchased sometime back set me back $300.00 which is now about $150.00. the Sleave is about $150.00, the card will cost between $100 to $125.00. so all in all, about $300 - $350. I still hav'nt found a lot of use for the Wireless hookup for the IPAQ, since I cannot use any of my home machines as a file server, to play music or video's off my IPAQ (translation: open path \\mycomputer\music\song.mp3 is not valid to play off my IPAQ. if some has a way to do it, please let me know, because nothing can beat a 120Gb SCSI harddrive as a MP3 storage media):(

Now the Toshiba Libretto which I purchased for $400, used, is something else. This is a Pentium 70Mhz machine, 2Gb HD, 64mb of RAM, 640x480 Screen. this is a real computer, uses wireless cards, and I can mount it on my dash for use as a GPS device with full color scrolling maps and voice because the size is only about 6-8inches by 4 inches by 1 inch..

I just found out that an application called NetRunner can mount shares on other machines. This expands real possibilities, since now, with a wireless card, you just expanded you storage capacity (atleast within wireless distance) to what ever your hard disk (or shares) can serve.

I tried it out, and now I can mount my vast MP3 collection (Several Gb's) and be in or outside the house chillin' and listen to them on the IPAQ. I can even watch MPG encoded movies. :D
