Anyone know of a way to reset a 5Mx screen that shows a stripey blank screen but the touch screen stylus has no effect? The batteries are fully charged and the usual soft reset does not work. Any ideas welcome. Thanks, Stan

Assuming you have a recent backup, you can perform a very hard reset by simply taking all the batteries out for 10 minutes; this will of course erase all your data.

However, given that you describe a 'stripey blank screen', I have a suspiscion that your 5 is suffering the fabled screen cable failure - is it a couple of years old?

Either way, check out my FAQ (www.silvester.org.uk) for more info.

Hi Stan,

Not sure what you mean by stripey blank screen? but it sounds a bit nasty. hopefully you have backed up recently as you may have to perform a hard reset which will result in you loosing everything on you c: drive.

Remove all batterys and leave without power for a couple of minutes. The screen should be completely blank. Put the batteries back in and start again. If still no joy or if screen did not go completely blank when you removed the batteries then you could have a screen fault. Have you dropped it recently?

If you haven't and it is still under warranty then get it back to Psion asap. If you did drop it or it is not under warranty then send it to POS as they perform repairs to Psion standards but not their cost.

Web site is as follows:

Message back if you need any other information or get it fixed.

Hi - you might already have seen my new thread and know that I was also struck by the curse of the ribbon cable. I tried the web-site below and I cannot reach it - is it only available at certain times?

BTW - my 5mx is about 14 months old. Which is very young for these kind of things to be happening.

Erm, I see what you mean; looks like my forwarding's gone south. The real hosting address is www.isbg00598.blueyonder.co.uk.

Yan,

I tried the blueyonder adress, but it too seems to be offline. Will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.

Si, Thanks for the reply and the http://www.posltd.com link. My 5mx is a couple of years old. It hasn't been dropped but has been passed through x-ray machines a couple of times which is the only abnormal thing I can think that's happened to it recently. The hard reset hasn't worked so it's time to use the link. Stan

wswaby. If your machine is a couple of years old then the ribbon cable is likely to be the cause of you stripey lines. If they disappear when you switch off the machine then this is almost definitely the cause. If not then your screen is probably damaged in some way. Either way it sounds like a trip to POS is in order. If you go for a new screen then they replace the cable as a matter of course, otherwise I think they can just replace the cable for a reduced cost.

How you manage to get it fixed soon.
