This was written on a 7 series thread by Simon Wolf. it is a bit lengthy so bear with it:

Q The built-in Browser application on my netBook/Series 7 machine won't start. It just says "Web was not designed to run on this machine".

A All the EPOC devices store their machine type in a word in the EEROM. As different devices have different screen hardware, this value is used by the Browser to dynamically change its behaviour appropriately for the machine it is on. It is possible that machines can have an invalid or incorrect value (most commonly 0) in their EEROM if, for example, the user has been handling the DIMMs, or had the chips replaced but not reprogrammed, or exposed the chip to very strong radiation, or been the victim of a bad virus and so on. These are all extremely unlikely events, but the end result is the same - the browser reports an unknown machine type and so wont start. (You can check the value of the machine type at any time from the System screen by typing Shift-Ctrl-Q.)

The solution is to re-program the EEROM with a good value. Two trivial programs are attached, one of which will blow the correct value for a netBook, and one which will blow the correct value for a Series 7. Download the DAE2KE.LDD library file and put it in a \system\libs directory on any drive. Download the appropriate program for your machine and put it in the root of that drive. Double-tap on its icon, and the machine type integer in the EEROM will be updated. Hard-reset the unit (ie remove all power and batteries, including the back-up battery), ensuring that you have done a back-up of the machine beforehand if you have anything on C: which you need. (We always recommend back-ups before doing anything with the batteries or any reset, even though 99.9% of the time everything works fine.) The Browser should now work correctly.

Note that a soft-reset is not sufficient, as it does not cause the E2 to be re-read. Also note that there is no need to keep either file on your machine once it is working; in fact you might as well install them on C: so they will get deleted when you do the hard reset.

The page can be found at http://www.psionteklogix.com/faq/Articles/faq0098.htm but you will need to be a member of the Partner Programme to get to it (and the downloads) which is free.

Could this work for us 7book owners? Could we upgrade the type of our machines from 7series to netbook? Would this cause any problems if we did? Does this type change affect anything else about the operation of the unit?

Just try it - all it does is change the Machine type. I've just tried running the netbook file on my P7 and it changes the machine type to "netbook" - then you can use the P7 file to turn it back.

I don't actually think it does anything other than that - perhaps it might just help all those 7book owners to complete the change (so to speak)

Cheers Bennite, I will do that when my 32mb DIMM upgrade appears as I will have to hard reset then aswell.

The above link is quite old and I think they have had a sort out of their content. The new link is as follows:

http://www.psionteklogix.com/teknet/pdk/faq/Articles/faq0098.htm

You do need a username and pw to access this so if you don't have this, just download the following zip with all the files and instructions to change the name to either netBook or 7.

Lol Psionteklogix have had a tidy up again and this is the new link for these downloads.....although the above .zip attachment is the same:

http://www.psionteklogix.com/teknet/pdk/faq/Articles/faq0098.htm

You will need a psionteklogix username/pw although this is free to set up.

Okay, so forgetting the possible illegality of doing this, would it be possible to write an app which changed the machine name to netpad, and then try running the netpad apps available for download on the psion teklogix site? It may even be possible to write wrappers for such apps i order to change the machine name and then change it back afterwards. Any thoughts?

Wouldn't be practical as the machine has to be hard reset to make the change.

Nice idea though! ;)
