I hope someone can help me. I have just dropped my psion and the programme seemed to re-start after I re-inserted the batteries which were still usable. I appear to have lost ALL data. Is there any way to retrieve this??

HELP

OUCH!

If the drop dislodged the back-up battery, as well as the AAs, then I'm afraid that you will have lost all data. The machine will have reset to its original "out-of-the-box" state, although at least it's still working!

This eventuality is where you need the all-essential data back-up, and if you have that, it's a simple matter to restore. Please tell me you have one?? Otherwise, I'm sorry to say there's not much you can do.

Many thanks for responsing, Julie. Have left a message on your site but the panic urges me to respond here too. I have a back-up disk of sorts. However, when I try to restore the files, an error message comes up "unformatted". Any suggestions?

Not sure what you mean by a backup disk "of sorts" - do you mean you have backed up the machine to an SSD?

It's a long time since I had a 3a, and I always did backups to PC - I never used a disk, so I have no hands-on experience. It sounds a little as if the disk may have lost data if you haven't used it in a while, but I'm guessing. Can someone else come in on this one please? Mike?

By the way, it was better to post here rather than at EpocChat. EpocChat is great for "live" chat and assistance at the appointed time on Sundays, but at other times more people will see your message here at PDA Street, and you will generally get a pretty quick response.

Can someone else come in on this one please? Mike? I think we need to know:

1) What type of disk are you trying to restore from?

2) What is "unformatted"? The disk you are trying to restore your backup from or the 3a's internal drive? If it is the 3a's drive, a hard reset should have the effect of formatting it.

Thanks for your replies both julile and Mike. You've got a right one here....

To be more specific.

- It's a Psion 3c
- I am trying to restore files stored on a SSD
-The error message is aimed at the SSD which is coming up "unformattted"

I* think, after all this I shall ahve to resign myself to the fact that "all is lost"....unless either of you can help.

Looking to the future, are there some software programmes that I can download free that will ennable a weekly back-up from Psion to PC?

Yours in hope

Michael

- I am trying to restore files stored on a SSD
-The error message is aimed at the SSD which is coming up "unformattted" This suggests that your backup is corrupt if it is a Flash SSD or the battery has run down with a loss of all data if it is a RAM SSD. The battery in a RAM SSD is intended to retain the data for short periods while it is out of the Psion - it is not intended to keep the data as a backup away from the Psion.

I suspect that, unfortuantely, your data has been lost.

are there some software programmes that I can download free that will ennable a weekly back-up from Psion to PC? PsiWin? You can download 1.1 from my website or 2.3.3 from www.psion.com/downloads/pc/psiwin2/233/english.exe (but this is a 25 Megabyte download). Both are free.

I should think that Pinnock Organiser Services in Streatham will be able to help you.

http://www.posltd.com

There's a map showing their location on their website.

You could also trying searching on eBay - there are often people selling cables belonging to their now defunct machines. Make sure it's specifically a 3c cable though - as far as I recall the early S3 cables were different.

I'm not sure whether a 3c cable is the same as the S5/S7 ones, actually - Mike will be able to tell us that.

Thanks for the information, Nick. Should be easy enough to get hold of a cable then, MJ.
