I'm looking into buying a P800. And I'm digging up info at the various digests and fora about the machine. I can't find answers to all questions though.
Does anyone here know if it is at all possible to sync agenda and contacts between a 5MX and a P800 ?
If not, how can one at least migrate from an EPOC machine to a P800 ? (in terms of easiliy moving over agenda, contacts, jotter etc.
thnx for help !

I have migrated Contacts in one block several times between 5mx/netBook and P800.
In fact I do it quite often, since I find it more practical to keep the 'mother' Contacts database on the Psion and then regularly move it over to the P800.
One the 5mx/netBook I use [Menu] [File] [More] [Export contact...] (select 'All Contacts in view')
This will produce a bulk vCard file which can be read by the P800.
Beam it over to P800 using infrared or via the PCMCIA Memorystick adapter.
Import it to the P800 using bulk import in similar manner.
(N.B. This does frustratingly not work between a 5mx and a 9210 or between a 9210 and a P800, not sure about Series 60 phones though)
I am not sure about Agenda. vCalendar might not be supported. Unless you can produce one using OPL.
cheers

I might as well reply to my own thread.
I indeed got me a P800.
Real nice at first , and also a bit disappointing. (it is NOT a Psion...) But it´s good to feel the basis of EPOC underneath.
So far I have moved all my contacts from the 5MX to the P800, by generating a vcf file, from within Contacts, by exporting all contacts to that file.
I beamed the file through infrared, using PlBeam, to the P800, which immediatly recognized it and told me I had indeed 474 contacts which could be added to the phonebook. (which I did)
Next step was to get all phonenumbers from my current nokia 6310i into the P800.
Here my 5mx (MC218 actually) helped out again. I have Phoneman on it, copied all entries from the old phone into Phoneman and saved them in a vcf gile again. Beamed it up again, same trick !
Before doing it this way I downloaded vCard, from Epocware. (15 days trial) It totally failed as I tried importing vcf files with it on the P800 giving errors 11 and 3. pfffff
(I could not find a bulk process from one phone to another, it was possible to do single entries inbetween phones)
And now for the agenda.... dunno how to do that yet, other then through Outlook or Lotus Notes. I do not yet have that yet.
To be continued.

Here´s another chapter on how to migrate essential stuff from EPOC to a P800.
I downloaded vCal. I nice utillity which converts EPOC agenda files to-from a vCal format.
I used this on my MC218, to create a file with all my meetings in there.
I got myself access to corporate Lotus Notes (this is essential in the process, maybe Outlook can do the same trick), copied the file to my PC and imported it into the Lotus Notes Calender. (I did have to donwload and install a Notes extention called iCalender, from an IBM website, sorry , dunno the URL right now, Google will find it)
Now the P800 will sync with Lotus Notes, so I did that (only for meetings so far)
First it would not work. I looked into the VCal file and compared it to the same type of file which I created through an export from Lotus Notes. It turns out that Notes put in a sentence ´METHOD: PUBLISH´
I added this same sentence to the top of my vCal file and tahtah ... all EPOC entries showed up in my P800 ! (there is something still with repeat entries, which do not get synced between Notes and 800, but it seems to be a feature.....)
To be continued again, for tasks as well.

I own a 5mx,revo+, 9210 and some (yes some) series 60 device's. I use my pc to synch al of them. When I sync my 9210 I also sync my series 60 device (just 1 bt adapter...) and this works superb. I start with syncing my er5 machine (mostly the 5mx, the revo is more a gadget...) than sync my other devices like 9210 and series 60 and end this sequal with the er5 machine again. In this way I transfer all the changes to and from al the seperate devices to my pc and to the other devices.
Some times I need to beam over single vcards or apointments via irda when I can't sync my devices.
There is a freeware app for series 60 devices to sync the enthire contacts and agenda, but can't find the darn URL.. so I have to post it some time later.
I think syncing the devices through a pc is the best option, 'cause the suites are made to do this.
Iff you are looking for a replacement for your "old" er5 machine, you should look at the 9500 by Nokia. I think it's the best possible choice at this moment.
Butt Psion tek is designing a new range of subnotebooks and pda's with LINUX as OS. Maybe you should wait til December when Psion is releasing this program?

Does this mean you do the syncing all in one pass ?
If I imagine keeping a P800 frequently in sync with my MC218, phew it´s a lengthy process ...so not suitable for frequent usage.
What´s your experience with that ?
the 9500 seems to be the perfect follow on for a 5mx. not available until the end of the year however and probably way over my budget...

In everything except for the keyboard and lack of touch screen.
A Nokia 7700 with Bluetooth keyboard might in fact be a better 5mx alternative.

Both are no go if you`re a diehard user of er5, I use some symbian os 6 and 7 machines butt must say they are nothing compared to my old 5MX and revo plus... Those new gadgets are a pda solution, er5 are office solutions.
What is it that you`re looking for? a device to have youre PIM`s sortend and do some quick email? than is a s60 or s80 a faire solution. The 9500 is practicaly the same as the 9210, it got some more office featiers and has both WiFi an BT. Very impressive screen but it`s still not an er5 substitute... Sadly...

Do not confuse hardware, application-set and user interface related matters with the Symbian OS version! ER7 is radically more powerful than ER5 in almost every aspect thinkable; applications (not the least office applications), multimedia, messaging, networking, security, developer support etc etc etc etc.
