I would like to connect to the internet with my mobile faster than at present (600-700 bps). I have a Nokia 6510 (similar to an 8310) with GPRS on O2. I've checked all the available information and heard nothing back from O2 so I was wondering if anyone could offer me any advice. Currently the phone is just dialling the standard 0845 number that I use to connect to my Freeserve account. Do I need to incorporate these settings (username and password etc) in setting up something new on both the phone and the 7. I copied the settings detailed in a previous post for vodafone and the mobile looked like it was going to connect for a brief moment before stopping. How does O2 differ, if at all? What else might I be doing wrong?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Neil.

Have a look at the GPRS files on the "Series 5" and "General Info" pages of my website. Julie can probably help you with the O2 side of things as she uses that network, but with an Ericsson phone. Otherwise Nokia settings in the files on my pages might help.
You don't use your Freeserve settings to connect because, with GPRS, you are using an "always on" connection to the internet via (in your case) O2. The Psion actually has to go through a "dial up" process to connect but you don't use an ISP. In your mail settings, you will still use Freeserve's POP3 server, email address, username and password. However for outgoing mail, you must use O2's SMTP mail server.

Hi Neil
Quick reply - yes I have GPRS working with my netBook on o2 - took a bit of doing though, because o2 just say "oh it doesn't work with EPOC" and leave you to it!
I'm just off to host EpocChat for the next hour or so, then I will post you some more info.

Hi Neil
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you - I had quite a trial setting up to use GPRS a few months back, mainly because of confusion over settings, but got there in the end! Hope you won't have so much hassle.
First of all, do have a good look through Mike's site as he suggests above - there's quite a bit of GPRS info contributed by different people, including my own set up for the Ericsson R520m, and a couple of important notes I made. Those settings are probably a good starting point - most of the Psion settings should be the same.
Obviously some settings need to be made on the phone, although if I recall correctly I believe the Psion just transmits them across.
I recommend that you do not allow o2 to "zap" settings direct to your phone - they will probably be wrong. Ask specifically to speak to someone on the Mobile Internet team and make sure they enable your account for "Mobile Internet" and not WAP.
The all important APN (Access Point Number) is mobile.o2.co.uk - you set that on the Psion, and o2 need to set it for your phone. For some reason, in the early stages with me they kept changing it, and I would get "Wrong APN" messages. I wasted an awful lot of time on that. If that happens to you bear in mind it is probably them and not you with the wrong setting!
Mike's advice with regard to e-mail is exactly right - I suggest you set up a separate "GPRS e-mail" account on the Psion, using your normal Freeserve settings for incoming POP3, but set your outgoing to "smtp.o2.co.uk"
I won't bombard you with any more info for now - suggest you give it a go and I'll try to help if you need any more guidance.

Tanks for all your help so far. I have checked Mike McC's website and set up information in the 'modem" and 'internet' applets in the control panel on my (now speedy) 7book. I tried the O2 information for the Ericsson 520 (being that I want to use GPRS with O2) and also the information with Nokia 6310 (but this was for voda so I changed the APN, username and password to those relevant to O2). Still no luck. A system message came up with a "server etel" or something (I just pressed continue - fool!) error and when I tried it again I get an 'Already exists" message. This appears without it even trying to connect to the phone, so there must be something psion-related as opposed to nokia or O2 related. I've tried to contact O2 to confirm that I am GPRS enabled, still waiting for a response. Also, whats this about a GPRS update? I knew nothing about it and haven't installed one since upgrading OS. Is this the missing piece of the jigsaw?
Hope someone can help,
Neil.

A system message came up with a "server etel" or something (I just pressed continue - fool!) error and when I tried it again I get an 'Already exists" message The Etel connection server has crashed, possibly due to some wrong settings or doing something incorrectly - the equivalent of "This prog has performed an illegal operation etc." on the PC. Because the dial up didn't close down properly, you are now getting an "Already exists" message but a 'soft' reset should clear this.
Also, whats this about a GPRS update? There is a GPRS update which might help and you can download a copy from the Series 5 page of my website - just don't ask me what it does because I don't use GPRS. If it doesn't help, you can always delete it again.

Try these sites for more guidance:
http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/mobileweb/gettingstarted/0,,141,00.html
http://www.nokia.com/phones/productsupport/6310i/guides.html
The Nokia link is for the 6310i, and it worked for me on O2 IRELAND, but you'll be in the vicinity of a link for your specific handset, I should think.
