I will start off by saying that I don't generally browse with cookies if I can avoid it since it makes it too easy for someone else to masquerade as me, and I'm a slightly paranoid individual.
That being said, I think it would be a gread addition to all of the forums here if there were a login button at the bottom of the Forum page like there is here. (http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/index.php?s=) This would make it so much easier to log in to see new posts or participate in polls rather than having to navigate all over the PDA street site just to log in.
Is there anyone else that would like to see this implemented if it can be done?

"C is for cookie, that is mighty good to me!"
If many people feel like you then maybe the change makes sense.

Pleeeeeeease!
Don't ever use thread titles like that. I had this horrifying thought flash through my mind that both I and Mr. Curious Cat were going to be banned and culled.:D

I would never want either of you banned. But you gave me a good idea for my next poll...:D

Bookie,
Whatever you do don’t start a poll about it…we might just get voted off the island. :D

Educate me. How does using cookies facilitate someone else masquerading as me? Wouldn't they have to be using my computer in my home?

Ahh, yes home computers are one thing, but I used to work in a college computer lab. I also often browse this forum while I wait for compiles and other tests to run at work, or from other computers I happen to be near. I thus have a "no cookie" policy for most sites.
I also said that I am a slightly paranoid individual. I also don't like the idea that cookies are used to track browsing patterns to customize ads that appear on some sites. Some of it is pointless I know but I still think a log on button at the bottom of the forum page would be nice since I can bookmark this page, come here and log on without any hassle.

As an addendum, I also don't like anything that keeps track of passwords and automatically logs me in anywhere. I use passwords for protection of information that I don't want other people to get at and I've seen schemes for auto-logon that don't encrypt passwords at all. I know most of those are gone now, but with all of the Micorsoft security holes it's a small piece of mind that most of my important passwords only exist in my head.
Would that imply that everyone would have to log in everytime they want to post? I hope not.

Heck no! Cookies would act exactly as they do now, it would just make it easier on those of us who are overly paranoid and opt out of the cookie option.

OK, to summarize your suggestion; you’re advocating that the forum have a special login button on the bottom of each main page “Paranoid Enter Here ”. :D
Just kidding, probably a good idea in today’s world with viruses, ad programs and identity theft. Hmm… where’s that button.

atszyman,
correct me if I am wrong, but couldn't you disable the cookie under "User CP' and "Options"? after that you can browse without the cookie and whenever you want to login in, the login is always on the top right hand side of the page.

Pekkle,
Oh how I wish that were true. I cannot for the life of me find a logon/login button anywhere on the Garmin Forum page, the fist place That I can find one is the link that is listed in my original post. Right now to login I either have to go up the the page with a login and navigate back to the forum, or I start a reply and then go back.
A place to login on the forum that would take me right back to the forum after I login would be a great convenience to me and maybe others which is why I started this thread to see if anyone else wanted something like this.

That wourld work or just a general logon button anywhere on this page (http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=108). It just bugs me that I can't log on to PDA street from a particular Forum, I have to find another method to do it.

Since I erase cookies when I shut off my computer, the way I log on here everyday as is follows:
I start a new thread, which first wants me to log in on another page. After I log in, I go to the top of the page and click on "Garmin iQue 3600" to get into this Forum--Voila!

Those are the steps I usually go through. I was just hoping that maybe they could be eliminated with the addition of a login button the the forum if enough people wanted it.

I see this option under the User cp -> Edit Options
Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies)
and
Browse board with cookies?
Clicking yes will use cookies to keep your id for this session. Clicking no will send it through the links. (Selecting no may cause problems when sharing links with people behind the same proxy as you)
Maybe these would help? Never tried those myself...

Have the fist option turned off, have the second turned on. However periodically I get logged off for no apparent reason could be my web browser, timeout or anything else and would like to have a simple way to log back on.

You may have set your browser or some ad aware type software to periodically clean out or turn off your cookies.

I don't think I could live without cookies given that several dozen sites I visit require them to be enabled and they do perform a very useful function much of the time. What I DO do is run a spyware detection program every day that deletes the bad cookies while leaving the tasty ones intact. Works well for me.

Have you considered a firewall program that asks you, for each cookie someone tries to plant, whether or not you want one from that site?
The predecessor to Norton Firewall had that feature. I'm not sure if the current version does. It does have some configurable cookie blocking though.
