Over the last few days I wrote an application that might be of use to someone out there.
http://olya.com/speed/speed.gif
Brief description:
Speed is a utility for Garmin iQue 3600. When enabled, it will monitor your speed and beep when you exceed a specified limit.
Speed is freeware. Download it here (http://olya.com/speed).

Cute! Exactly what some people have asked for.
I think I have to start putting some time into getting my CodeWarrior installation running. It seems fun, this iQue programming.
But as always, when trying to use a new development environment, there is a threshold to overcome, before you can even compile the simplest of applications.
The only thing I don't like about your application, is that it installs to something else than "Unfiled". I don't want my applications to tell me where they should go, I want to tell them. In this case, I have deleted the "Que" category, but use one called "GPS" instead.
I consider installing to Unfiled being a better way. What do others think?
For drivers on the German Autobahn, is there any setting to alert you when you fall below 170 km/h, for example?
(Not funny).

Point taken -- I just uploaded a version of Speed that installs into Unfiled.

It would be funny to set the low limit to 80 kmh and play "Speed" (with a bomb explosion sound as the alert sound).

I am sure I will not need to use it as often as others :D , but I am also sure that it is a VERY useful application.
Looks very nice! Thanks!
Edit: Just realized that I will use it fairly often, as I can enter the limit for the winter tyres (210 kph). Cool!

I have also written a similar program now, but it had been great if the speed limit was possible to change automatically.
Is it possible to get the speed limit information of the road you are driving?

Isn't that how the GPS Routing function determines ETA, by knowing the speed(s) of the road(s) on which it is creating the routes??!!

Nice! Thank you!
I beleive the iQue has pre-determined speeds for the types of roads, not for specific roads in particular (like interstate 67mph, major highway 58mph, to residential street 25 mph)
You can see this in Mapsource (preferences-routing). In mapsource you can change this constants, so the timing will fit your driving habits. I couldn't find such a tweak on the iQue though.

This is a very useful application, especially for us Germans when travelling abroad.:D
I missed this feature ever since my `93 Audi.
Thanks, a lot!

This platform is amazing and it becomes even more so with very nice people like Andrey, the folks at CetusGPS, etc.. giving us FREE useful apps. Can't thank them enough.
While on this subject of Speed, is it possible for the app to automatically change the speed limit based on the type of road (the info that some are saying is already available in Mapsource data). If I set the speed to 65mph which is the common speed limit in Californian freeways, I will be way over the speed limit when I am on the expressways/business district/residential streets.

You certainly have my vote! If you want to run for President thats ok too! You probably saved me hundreds in traffic fines and you may have even saved a few lives! Better than the $0.50 I made on Goerge's tax break :D

Excellent (ala Mr. Burns voice).
It's a useful program around town too where the local police establishment are in endless pursuit of their mandate "To Serve and Profit".
What would make it ideal would be an option to automatically Re-enable the program after the maximum beeps in a row sound and the speed once again drops below the threshold.

Derodeo, I think if you set your beeps for "INF" it should solve your problem.

I have a problem with the timing. Last Sunday I was with a friend using the iQue to get us to the ski slopes early, and we got nailed for 77 in a 55 at 7 AM. The only good part was that I was not driving.
Coulda used this last weekend.:(
(Just shows no matter what you do, someone will complain:D )

Very cool.
Couple of suggestions:
1. Use the thumbwheel to change the speed limit (or also the up/down buttons).
2. Allow speed limit changes to go down if the lower half of the button is tapped. You have to use the PenDownEvent, rather the the button event.
Thanks for your efforts.

Thank you for the program.
I took it for a test drive this evening. I would like to see 1 feature added to this program. After the preset speed is reached the program deactivates, this is a bit frustrating when trying to “activate” it again while in traffic. I would like to see the program automatically rearm itself after you receive the warning AND decelerating below the preset speed.
Thank you

Since your getting all these change requests, can you make it beep when it detects radar? :D

I suppose I could add that. The problem is that if you set the limit to 75mph, and you drive just around 75, the program will rearm itself continuously (each time you drop below 75). The constant beeping will be annoying.

These are good suggestions. The next version will add the following controls:
- Wheel up/down will change the speed by 5 units
- Button up/down will change speed by 1 unit
- Wheel in will toggle between enabled/disabled

The current Garmin API doesn't expose anything but position/velocity/time/satellite locations. Additionally, MapSource's road types probably don't correlate very well with speed limits. This would be a nice feature to add, but I don't think it's going to happen.
Thank you for suggestions everyone.

I guess you could implement a threshold for re-enabling the program somewhere a bit below the existing speed setting but even if you didn't, having this new feature would be a very desirable thing. Making it user-selectable might be best. Anyway, it's a great little program. Thanks.

quick question... Any possibility of creating some sort of software that is able to do 1/4 mile times, sort of like a car performance meter. Basically you press a button and as soon as you go, it registers mph and time, until you reach 1/4 of a mile. It would then stop, and tell you, the time it took, and your trap speed? It is along the same concept, i belive. Thanks

adding hysteresis to the threshold should take care of the repeated alarms around the set limit. it should also be possible to add 2 or 3 separate thresholds and alarm after each one is triggered. perhaps consider acceleration (highway on ramp) in determining if the first alarm should be triggered or not. or squelch the alarm if it has exceeded the threshold by more 50% of the difference to the next alarm. there are all sorts of possibilities here.
i know someone else suggested in another thread increasing the periodicity of the beeps to correspond to the magnitude over the threshold.
oh and thanks for writing this. very cool.
one thing i haven't seen in the iQue programming is volume control based on speed of vehicle. just like being able to set the backlight during the day or night, i'd like to see volume control based on speed so i wouldn't have to adjust the bean bag mount speaker when getting on and off the highway.

Very useful little goodie . Thank you.
I want just to add my impression that it would be useful to add a little feature to it.
I set it to contiunous row of beeps of 1 sec. and it did not determin how much faster I am driving than the set speed limit , the sound is that same. I would suggest that it beeps more often if the actual speed is higher than the set speed limit and the frequency of beeps repetitions is proportional to your speed, and let say if you drive really too fast it beeps continously.
One of you said of adding the feature of measurement the aceleration for 1/4 mile (if I am right). In Europe we measure how much time is needed fto accelerate from 0 km/h to 100 km/h, so if this feature is once implemented it could be good to set it for European and American standards. I think that if it is set to "acceleration measurement mode" there could be no need to activate it by pressing the button but the program would determine by itself the moment when your speed rises from 0 and than it would start the measurement automatically.
I would also suggest that the current speed could be dispalyed with big font , so it is easily visible if the screen of the program is on.
regards,
CaptMike

Point taken, however I think that most people would find it more annoying to have to reset the program each time the speed linit is surpassed. Perhaps a user could figure that into their setting and apply an additional few mph's as a buffer.
Another possible solution to the potential annoying problem, if the user did not want use a buffer mph in the setting, would be to have set a less annoying tone.

Is the beep supposed to be heard through the auto adapter speaker? Mine beeps only through the internal speaker - not very loud (over my stereo).
Thanks for a great program!...looking forward to the easily adjustable settings via buttons and rocker.

I noticed the same thing, it beeps through the iQue internal speaker and not out through the nav kit speaker.
When I was up in the higher speeds and with the radio on it was a bit hard to hear even with it turned up to max.
Anyway to get it to come out the nav kit speaker? :)

The beep sounds DO come out of my nav kit speaker where they can be heard very well indeed. Check your iQue Volume settings.

thanks, really good program.
I can hear the beep from the Nav speakers too. The only problem I found is that if you switch to a Fugawi map it seems that Fugawi doesn't receive the satellite signals, so no routing or tracking is possible with Fugawi while SPEED is enabled :(. [Going on a route to a waypoint on Garmin while looking on a Fugawi map... it normally works fine]
If you set SPEED to 'disable' then Fugawi finds the satellites immediately and switches to the right map showing your positions again (no resets needed).
BTW The Garmin route advise still pops up good and the Garmin program functions ok.
But I guess it was a bit over-asking..

I would like to think this is a problem with Fugawi. Other third-party applications that read GPS data, such as Cetus GPS, don't appear to be bothered by Speed. Unfortunately, there is no demo version of Fugawi available for iQue (as far as I can tell), so I can't reproduce the problem. The chances of this getting fixed are slim. Sorry.
when i push the try button i don't have any sound, and i do have my sound turned all the way up

The iQue cannot be used for measuring 0-100kmh times. GPS signals are only processed once a second, which means timings could by off by up to 2 seconds. That wouldn't be very useful, would it?
